BCNH Nutritional Therapy Qualification

Contemplating a career change? Always been passionate about nutrition? Read on - you could be part of the next generation of high calibre BCNH qualified Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

BCNH Logo

BCNH has a distinguished reputation for training high calibre nutritional therapists by providing them with an excellent and rewarding academic experience.  BCNH offers various part-time courses (attendance and online), designed to fit around work, family or other commitments. BCNH teaches nutrition on the basis of Functional Medicine with a strong emphasis on a holistic, albeit evidence-based approach. Their aim is to help facilitate the integration of Nutritional Therapy (NT) into orthodox medicine, and as such, BCNH teaches nutritional therapy as an evidence-based subject, rather than an 'alternative' medicine.  The curriculum is continuously reviewed to ensure BCNH staff and students are up to date with the latest research.

BCNH training is of the highest quality - BCNH Degree-level Diploma in Nutritional Therapy is credit-rated by the University of Greenwich and accredited by the Nutritional Therapy Council (NTC).  In addition, Diploma graduates can upgrade their qualification to a BSc by studying additional credits with the University of Greenwich.

Studying at degree-level is not just about taking lecture notes and absorbing facts; it is also about the development of intellectual skills, which any health practitioner needs to apply in a modern clinical practice. BCNH not only guides students in their development of technical knowledge and clinical skills, they also provide them with the training needed to critically evaluate the often conflicting findings from research studies in order to come to safe, evidence-based recommendations.  BCNH believes this provides their graduates with the best possible foundation for a safe and successful practice.

Based in Central London, BCNH is a truly global college, with graduates and students all over the world.  In addition to the Degree-level Diploma, BCNH offers various other part-time courses, including a Science Foundation Course and a short course for the general public (Nutrition for You & Your Family). Whether you are looking for a career in Nutritional Therapy practice, research, charity or corporate health promotion, BCNH courses will provide you with the knowledge, confidence and the tools to do whatever you set out to achieve.

Tomatis Listening Therapy:  Back to School ........ for a Head Start

Tomatis Listening Centre

A new school year begins and this is the time of the year that the Listening Centre London is at its busiest, either completing courses children started in July or receiving bookings from concerned parents who realize that their children aren’t ready for the school environment.

Older children may be under performing, developing stress related symptoms due to poor reports and falling behind their expected levels. Happily, these situations can be helped by improving the child’s ability to listen. Listening is very different from hearing. A good analogy of listening would be the difference between gazing out of a window and not really focusing on anything in particular, compared to being interested and zooming in on objects of interest. One is a passive activity, the other active.

Poor auditory processing is behind a person’s lack of ability to hold focus and find meaning in what is being presented to them. Once interest and attention has been awakened by improving

the speed and quality of sound information relayed to the brain, learning and communication becomes meaningful and rewarding. Often children complain that subjects are boring and show little aptitude for them; this is usually a sign that the ‘way in’ hasn’t been found and hence no real excitement or sense of achievement can be attained in the subject.

Tomatis Listening Therapy opens doors that have been closed and allows the child to enter with wonder. Success in academic learning, is achieved by improved attention memory and concentration, better physical balance and coordination, and a heightened body awareness. All of these effects can result from undergoing Tomatis Listening Therapy.

The therapy works by exercising the muscles of the middle ear; these are the muscles that move the hammer and stirrup bones. Sound transmission then becomes quick and efficient, unlike slow distorted transmission which leaves us in a tuned-out state, rather liked an untuned musical instrument. Dr. Tomatis used to say rather poetically that the therapy makes us virtuosos of the muscles of the middle ear.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse Awareness Campaign

I am initiating a campaign to increase recognition of pelvic organ prolapse, undoubtedly the most common medical condition women experience.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Inadequate statistics, little research funding, unacceptable levels of media coverage, absurd when you consider there are over three million women in the US with POP and millions more in countries around the world. The current dynamic for pelvic organ prolapse will not shift until all layers involved, women experiencing it, healthcare professionals who treat it, and the media who can broadcast it, all come together with a strong voice. It is my hope that as we continue to network and share insights, POP will become common knowledge for all women. Together we can evolve understanding of this common, diverse women’s health condition.

The YouTube below details my interest in establishing global POP awareness; the links below discuss the path Sherrie is taking to speak publicly in an effort to increase awareness and evolve understanding of this common, cryptic women’s health concern.

Fertility Clinic Offers Counselling Service

In line with HFEA requirements, leading Scottish fertility clinic Hope Fertility offers counselling to couples and individuals going through all stages of treatment.

Hope Fertility

Qualified psychotherapist Myra Eadie works independently within the service, which is based at Nuffield Health in Glasgow’s West End. Hope Fertility, which brings together more than a dozen of Scotland’s leading fertility experts, offers services such as IVF treatment, egg donation, egg sharing egg sharing, intracytoplasmic sperm injection and ovulation induction.

Couples and individuals are invited to make an appointment with Myra in the weeks leading up to the start of fertility treatment.

Myra explains: “Hope Fertility offers a variety of fertility services, and the timing of the first session of counselling depends on the treatment the patient is undergoing. If the treatment involves the preparation of embryos or surgical sperm retrieval, for example, we suggest that patients have their first appointment within the same month of the treatment being approved.

“Counselling can then continue throughout the treatment process, either on a regular basis, or as and when patient desires. If treatment is successful, women very often continue to seek counselling and do so until the first scan, because they are continuing to seek reassurance, which the first scan can provide.”

Hope Fertility offers a safe and confidential environment for couples or individuals to express their thoughts, emotions and feelings. With stress playing a key factor in infertility for many people, Myra teaches patients practical techniques that can aid the process. The majority of patients who use Hope Fertility’s counselling service are women, who attend sessions on their own, accounting for two thirds of Myra’s appointments. The remaining third is largely couples, with a small number of men solely attending sessions.

Further Information

Hope Fertility complements the Assisted Conception Unit (ACS) at Nuffield Health’s Glasgow clinic which is licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). For further information, please visit Hope Fertility at www.hopefertility.co.uk

NUIQUE® Omega 3 EPA and DHA - Omega 3 Supplement Direct from Source (Algae)

Nuique Pack

Omega 3 EPA and DHA are essential long chain fatty acids that cannot be synthesized by the human body but are vital for good health and therefore need to be obtained from the diet by consuming either oily fish or a fish or algae oil supplement.[*1]

A key reason oily fish contain essential long chain Omega 3 EPA and DHA is that they feed on Omega 3 rich algae, however recent reports have suggested that boosting your Omega 3 by increasing the amount of oily fish you eat can on one hand be very good, but can also have a potentially dangerous side effect.  Many of the most popular oily fish have been found to contain high levels of toxins, heavy metals and other contaminants that are detrimental to health. While boosting your Omega 3, the danger of ingesting these contaminants can be avoided by simply bypassing fish and going straight to the Omega 3 source - algae.

Nuique® Omega 3 EPA & DHA supplement offers a rich source of EPA and DHA derived from algae that is farmed, away from the sea in a pharmaceutical grade facility.  To ensure purity, potency and consistency, each batch of Nuique is checked by an independent laboratory.

The food supplement NUIQUE® Omega 3 EPA & DHA is one of the purest sources of Algae Omega 3 providing a highly concentrated 100mg EPA and 400mg DHA per 2 capsule daily dose.  The Advantages of Nuique® Omega 3 supplement:

  • Pure, unadulterated and 100% natural
  • Offers high EPA and DHA directly from source without passing through the food chain
  • Algae oil is chemically identical to fish oil without worry of associated toxins
  • Less fishy in flavour (no fishy burps!)
  • Vegetarian and Vegan approved
  • Sustainable, does not contribute to diminishing fish stocks
  • Very low in Omega 6 and saturated fat as it has no added Omega 6 in the form of Sunflower oil or Sunflower lecithin

Footnote

*1. Plant sources of Omega 3 don't contain either DHA or EPA. Instead, they contain ALA, an Omega 3 that the body can then convert to DHA and EPA. However, the assimilation of ALA requires a multi-step conversion process making it much less efficient in gaining the needed fatty acids than fish or algae oil which provide DHA and EPA directly.

Further Information

NUIQUE® OMEGA 3 EPA & DHA costs £18.65 for a month's supply (60 capsules); however if you buy if from www.nuique.com  you can take advantage of a 3 for 2 offer. Link to additional Information on Omega 3 and its benefits:

Soft Tissue Release – A Practical Handbook for Physical Therapists

by Mary Sanderson

Published by Lotus Publishing. 2012. Softback. £11.99. ISBN 1905367376.

Soft Tissue Release – A Practical Handbook for Physical Therapists

Soft Tissue Release - A Practical Handbook for Physical Therapists was published on 28 August 2012. The book was originally written in 1998 as the first book on soft tissue release. It has since gone on to sell many thousands of copies, and has been instrumental in making soft tissue release a vital tool in the therapist's range of techniques that can be offered to clients.

Whether for sporting competition, work or generally for the maintenance of posture, everyone needs muscles that are not only strong, but also supple and in balance. Regular manipulation of the soft tissues has an essential role to play, and soft tissue release (STR) will transform any treatment, allowing specific problems to be rapidly and effectively addressed. The book has been updated and is published in colour for the first time, including new photography and drawings to illustrate the theory and techniques involved.

The book is split into ten comprehensive parts including an Introduction to STR, STR - the technique, STR and the young athlete, STR and Pregnancy/Post Pregnancy, STR and the Older Person, STR and Self-Treatment, as well as breaking down into specific body parts including, Lower Limb, Trunk and Neck and Upper Limb.

As well as having its own specific attributes, STR has all the physiological benefits of traditional massage, including increasing venous and lymphatic drainage. The increase in interstitial pressure during and after massage allows for easier fluid absorption so that fresh blood can enter fatigued or traumatised areas. Adhesive tissues can be mobilised and scar tissue broken into smaller particles for phagocytosis and lymphatic absorption to occur.

Author, renowned STR therapist, Mary Sanderson said: “Soft tissue release (STR) is a dynamic, participative and versatile massage technique that contributed to the healing of my own injury twenty years ago. Detailed, accurate and technical work to the soft tissues is often the missing link within physical therapies. Many injuries are due to minor soft tissue dysfunction and muscle imbalance and can be rehabilitated with the right massage.”

About Mary Sanderson

Mary Sanderson BA Sports Studies degree, London School of Sports Massage(Dip) Sports Massage and Certificate in Neuromuscular Re-education runs her own private practice in Hastings and is a senior tutor for the London School of Sports Massage (LSSM) and the Northern Institute of Massage. In addition to this she lectures to chiropractors and chartered physiotherapists on their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes.

Chairs with Balls - Improve Your Posture and Provide a Core Muscle Workout

Research physiotherapists at Limerick University have compared sitting positions on a standard office chair and The Back App chair. The team found that the activation of important trunk muscles was significantly lower on the Back App meaning that sitting upright required less effort.

Chairs with Balls

The research leader, Kieran O’Sullivan, said “Most people would assume that sitting without a backrest would be hard. However, our work shows that using the Back App means that you sit upright more easily.”

A small ball at the centre of the circular base makes the user have to balance while they are sitting. The ball can be adjusted to change the amount the user has to balance from very little up to a level that provides a gentle core muscle workout.

The angle between thighs and trunk (known as the hip angle) is greater than on a regular chair. This leads to the shape of the spine, while sitting on the Back App, to be very similar to that when standing up. This neutral position is considered an optimal posture by physiotherapists.

The fact that sitting requires less effort on the Back App, according to Kieran, is “probably because of the larger hip angle or the motion of the seat or both.” Either way you will be using less effort to maintain a good posture, exercising you core and sitting on a very stylish chair.

The paper and abstract are available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.math.2012.05.016
