BCNH Top Quality Nutrition Course - Online Global College

BCNH is a small but exclusive college focused on offering top quality courses in Nutritional Therapy in central London. As our students come from all parts of the world, we consider ourselves to be a truly global college.  Our courses are available online and on an attendance basis or a combination of both. For detailed information on all our courses, please visit www.bcnh.co.uk.  Our students can study for a part-time BSc (Hons) programme in Nutritional Therapy (delivered by the University of Greenwich in partnership with BCNH), Level 6 Diploma in Nutritional Therapy (credit-rated by UG) or a science foundation course.

BCNH Top Quality Nutrition Course - Online Global College

BCNH continues to expand in terms of students and staff. This year we had the highest student intake in Year 1 to date, which suggest that BCNH is becoming increasingly more popular and recognised for the quality of its teaching and student support.  We have also employed a new Programme Leaders to help the Head of Education with the increasing academic workload. As always, studying at BCNH is demanding, but informative and enjoyable. As a small college, every student is treated as an individual and students are very happy with both the academic support they receive and the quality of the educational materials.

This year, we have introduced a brand new system for delivering lectures online, so distance learning students can watch lectures live, while all students can choose to watch parts or all of the lecture again in their own time via a sophisticated search system. The lecture and audio recordings are of high quality and students love it.

At BCNH, the ethos is not about making money, but achieving the best possible academic and clinical standards for our students. We believe in thorough education and an in-depth understanding of mechanisms, so that upon graduation our students can start their clinical practice with confidence and are well equipped to write letters to GPs and other health professionals with confidence, professionalism and authority.

We do not believe that Nutritional Therapy is an ‘alternative medicine’ but a complementary discipline to medical profession. Hence our teaching is based on the latest research and students are required to apply the latest research findings when seeing clients in a clinical setting. Hence our students say that Year 4 clinical practice is the most difficult, yet the most rewarding part of the course. See some of the clients’ testimonials here.

Aside from meeting academic requirements, students are also encouraged to contribute to our quarterly newsletter. Our students, graduates and members of the public enjoy reading about the latest news at BCNH, the success of various graduates, food and science topics and a bit of humour as well.

Bach Flower Remedies - Helping Carers Care

Workshops with Anna Jeoffroy-Salmon - 1st June 2016

The number of clients, friends and family who are dealing with relatives suffering with Dementia seems to feel like an epidemic. My own mother is now a shadow of her former self with carers and family being with her 24/7 to keep her safe and as happy as possible. Caring for someone with any disability is challenging and dementia is no exception. Spouses and families are being caught up in the provision of service and care for long term seriously challenging conditions.

Bach Flower Remedies - Helping Carers Care

Caption: Wild Rose – this essence is about being in the present and totally at one accepting what is. I have found it helpful as a carer to help me to accept things as they are and not waste precious time wishing they were different. This essence has the potential to help both clients and carers.

Bach flower remedies have been my biggest help through some of the most challenging times in my life including divorce, caring for my second husband, bereavement, and now caring for my Mother. I know my patience and my own sanity are only intact thanks to my set of Bach flower essences.

I will be sharing how to use Bach Flower remedies specifically as a support for carers of Dementia and other life limiting disorders in one day workshops delivered to carers and therapists as CPD days.

The first of which will be in Cambridgeshire on Wednesday 1st June 2016

Fee to include CPD certificate and a light vegetarian lunch - £125.00

If you or your organisation would like to host a day or attend a day please contact Anna:

  • Understand how we affect our patients demeanour;
  • Understand your fears and your clients;
  • Come to terms with what is happening;
  • Understand our own issues around the situation;
  • Know which remedies will be useful in different situations;
  • Learn different ways to take and use Flower remedies.

Hypnotherapy and a Case Of Insomnia

by Dr John Butler

Arthur was 48 years old and came to me with a problem of not being able to sleep.  When I asked him about his present life, he said he had been under stress for some time.  A freelancer, his field of work was becoming increasingly competitive and he was working long hours, putting off social life and long-term plans.  Sometimes he felt so desperate to sleep he would drink a lot more than usual, however he felt hung-over, not refreshed, the next day.  He was reluctant to try sleep medications, saying he didn’t want to give up on regaining his ability to sleep naturally.  So he’d decided to try hypnosis.

Testing client response to hypnosis - hypnoanaesthesia

Hypnosis is a powerful skill which is imparted to a client through acting in partnership with the hypnotherapist.  Arthur proved responsive to this process, and like many clients, found his first hypnotic experience the most relaxed he’d felt “in years”.  He then practised at home with a recording I gave him, and he arrived at the next session saying he had managed to sleep better, and to feel rested.  This experience gave him much hope that he could regain a satisfactory sleeping pattern.

The increased focus of attention that occurs in hypnosis is highly suited to developing new skills and coping strategies.  Arthur’s circumstances had changed, his work life was harder than it had been, and wasn’t likely to get better externally.  So the task was to expand his skills to cope better - to move from a ‘panicked’ stress reaction, which was very draining, to a long-term, sustainable strategy.  Through mental ‘rehearsal’ and analytical work in hypnosis, Arthur redesigned his approach to his life, reviewing values and choices made in the past.  He downsized his outgoings, reducing the pressure on him to accept any work offers that came his way.  He ring-fenced a basic program of exercise, healthful living practices and recreation.  In hypnosis, we worked out self-commitments for Arthur that he consented to, not only on a conscious but also on a subconscious level (a most common reason for a failure to keep up self-commitments is subconscious sabotage), and in stages he incorporated these into his life.

In 6 sessions over 4 months, Arthur transitioned to an altered lifestyle, designed and chosen by himself.  With less pressure, he felt more “true to himself”, sleeping was again something that “just happened” and he developed his relaxation skills by listening to the recording I gave him.  An unexpected bonus was that he became more creative in his work, which he was finding very exciting.  He joked, “Maybe it’ll be the next big thing, but if not I’m fine having fun with it.”

Distance Analysis and Healing with the Chakra Energy System - My Way!

John R Cross FCSP Dr Ac

What is Healing? What is Distance Analysis? What is Distance Healing? How can you possibly effect changes in the bodies and psyche of a fellow human by not even being in the same room, or even in the same country? All of these questions, and many more, are answered in the new book by Dr John Cross. This is John’s 3rd self-published book and his 9th in total.

Distance Analysis and Healing with the Chakra Energy System - My Way!

John has practised this fascinating but sometimes controversial form of healing for over twenty years and has given many practical seminars in that time. This publication makes a departure from his other tomes that have dealt with physical therapy and ‘hands-on’ healing. He has, of course, written extensively on the chakra energy system before and he believes that practising distance analysis and healing just through this system of energy is the correct way forward because it covers every aspect of the physical, etheric, emotional and mental aura and provides a grounding for a topic that could be extremely esoteric in nature.

Since obtaining his acupuncture doctorate almost 30 years ago from the British College of Acupuncture with a thesis on the correlation of traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, John has attempted to demystify this energy system that was once only associated with yoga and meditation. He has influenced scores of practitioners in his seminars and the written word and is recognized as a world authority on the subject. He believes that everyone has the capability to become a distance healer and the only pre requisites for doing so would be that you have to have total focus and a bag load of love and empathy towards you fellow humans.

Further Information

The book is available through John’s web site www.johncrosspublications.com  as both a hard copy or as a pdf download - each is priced at £4.95.

Chronic Fatigue Treatment at the Dove Clinic

The Dove Clinic sees patients with a variety of chronic conditions. Much of the approach of Dr Julian Kenyon, who founded the Dove Clinic in 2000, revolves around the immune system and how to improve its function. This covers both the innate and the acquired immune systems.

Dr Kenyon has over thirty years of experience which he draws on in order to inform his clinical decision making. But this is by no means the only tool in his medical toolkit. The others will include Live Blood Analysis which involves drawing a pin prick of the patient's blood and looking at its condition under a powerful microscope which is then transmitted to a computer monitor so that the patient can also see it.

Live Blood Analysis

Live Blood Analysis as Viewed Under the Microscope

Dr Kenyon also makes use of the Oberon device to provide information on energy patterns at various locations throughout the patient's body. The Oberon also helps with the production of detox drops which all patients take away with them.

For all new patients, this is usually enough to build up a picture to inform the patient of a diagnosis and a potential treatment regime.  For some patients there will also be a suggestion to undertake external blood tests which can give further information on the exact condition or the extent to which it may have progressed.

Dr Kenyon's chronic fatigue patients will usually be recommended to take a course of supplements. Commonly this will include Immiflex and Krill Oil.

The purpose of the Immiflex is to provide support to the immune system. This happens because of the way in which the body interacts with the key ingredient, Wellmune.  This is derived from part of the cell wall of baker’s yeast. The DNA of the yeast is completely removed in the production process so that there is no problem for patients who have a yeast intolerance. The presence of the Wellmune does however create a heightened alertness in the body's innate immune system (that is the part which we are born with).   Immiflex also contains vitamin D which helps with immune function. The function of the Krill is anti-inflammatory.

One further option for chronic fatigue patients is a course of intravenous vitamin C infusions. These are usually delivered twice a week for four weeks, so eight infusions in total starting at 25 grams on the first session and working up to 60 grams for the later sessions. The program will be tailored to the patient's needs in discussions with the nursing team who will deliver the treatments.

Functional Anatomy of the Pilates Core: An Illustrated Guide to Safe and Effective Core Training Program

by Dr Evan Osar and Marylee Bussard

Published by Lotus Publishing. 2015. Softback. £18.99 / $23. ISBN: 978-1905367559.

Functional Anatomy of the Pilates Core

Functional Anatomy of the Pilates Core written by Evan Osar and Marylee Bussard, reveals the missing connection between functional anatomy of the core and its application during fundamental core exercises in Pilates. By integrating the six fundamental principles of the Pilates method with a descriptive application of functional core anatomy, the authors illustrate clearly how to:

  • Achieve the alignment, breathing, and control required for developing optimal posture and movement;
  • Suppress non-optimal habits that relate to common postural dysfunction, muscle imbalances, and chronic tightness;
  • Incorporate optimal alignment, breathing, and control into the fundamental Pilates principles in order to develop a more stable core and eliminate the risks of common injuries while accomplishing one's health and fitness goals.

Pilates is a widely accepted and utilized method for promoting health and proper movement patterns through the development of balanced muscles, joint alignment, and core control. However, when the principles of functional anatomy - anatomy based on how humans are designed to stabilize and move - are not considered during exercise application, the result can be muscle imbalances, chronic tightness, and even pain.

Chapters of the book include Introduction to the Pilates Principles, The Functional Core: The Role of the Thoracopelvic Canister, Developing Core Stability, Dysfunction of the Core, Responses to Non-optimal Core Stabilization Strategies and Integrating the Pilates Principles.

Start your Journey to Destination Wellbeing©

Naturopath Emma Lane shares her holistic approach to creating true and sustainable wellbeing in a three-day workshop – Destination Wellbeing© – Health Evolution.

Emma Lane

“I believe in creating wellness through education and that practitioners are obliged to teach their clients as well as give remedies. A cure is a removal of symptoms and any good practitioner is capable of that, however creating true wellbeing is not just the absence of symptoms, it is achieving optimal health, function and balance in the individual so they are able to live the life they desire. “Real healing is the self-care a person consciously does on the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical levels. Destination Wellbeing© is my approach to achieve this.

“The body is a cybernetic system – all the systems affect each other; if there is an imbalance in one system it will impact the function of the others. If we neglect any one of these over a period of time, it will lead to “dis-ease” in the body, and ultimately disease. “For example, weight loss is not just about calories and exercise; blood sugar balance and hormones play a huge role, so a personal trainer, health coach or nutritionist won’t achieve the goals their clients hope for unless they look at the whole body.

“I work with what I refer to as 12 pillars of wellbeing. They combine to affect our overall wellbeing and include nutrition, energy creation, chronic stress, me time, relationships, movement and emotional balancing. “I teach practitioners how to identify and recognise the symptoms of imbalance in all 12 wellbeing pillars. This is not just about our feelings of physical health, our emotional and mental wellbeing are just as important to keep in balance.  “During the Destination Wellbeing© course I will share many of the tools, questionnaires and in-house tests that practitioners can use to gather information on their clients’ health, including my own Destination Wellbeing© evaluation system. “There are many techniques and healing methodologies that can be used straight away to effectively rebalance the imbalanced pillars of wellbeing and help stop the formation of diseases such as diabetes.

“As practitioners we need to encourage long-term lifestyle changes with our clients so they experience real and sustainable benefits. Over my 25 years’ experience in working with clients I have learnt many healing techniques and approaches that create powerful positive change in clients’ wellbeing and life. Destination Wellbeing© brings the many strands together to create a complete approach to real wellbeing; I am very excited to share this with my fellow practitioners and members of the general public who wish to learn more about healing their own health.”

Dr Zak's Cinnamon and Raison Bagels

After their Multi-Seed Bagels received such high acclaim, Dr Zak’s are excited to announce the launch of their new high protein Cinnamon & Raisin Bagels.

Dr Zaks Bagel

When Dr Zak’s, specialists in high protein functional foods, launched their Multi-Seed Bagels last year they received rave reviews. Not only were they praised for their dietary benefits, but also for their taste. With 24g of protein per bagel and reduced carbohydrates, they were a nutritional dream, not only for those wanting to easily up their daily protein intake, for fitness recovery or muscle building, but also for dieters, with the added protein and a high fibre content helping keep hunger locked up for longer.

With fans ranging from elite sports men and women to health food gurus there was only one criticism of the bagels - ‘why is there only one flavour’.

Now the anticipated wait for a new Dr Zak’s bagel is over!

Jammed full of juicy raisins and the spicy sweet flavour of cinnamon the new bagels certainly don’t let the side down when it comes to taste and they pack a serious punch when it comes to nutrition.

With the same high protein content as their multi-seed cousin, roughly that of a chicken breast, 30% less carbohydrate than a conventional bagel and 4.9g of fibre, they certainly live up to the hype of their predecessor. Fantastic on their own, toasted with a bit of butter or, for a super protein hit, slathered with Dr Zak’s high protein peanut butters, upping your daily protein levels has never been tastier!

Further Information

Dr Zak’s new Cinnamon and Raisin bagels are available from leading nutrition stores and gyms around the country and www.musclefood.com . For more information visit www.dr-zaks.com .

The Cancer Revolution: The Future of Cancer Care

by Patricia Peat

Published by Win-win Health Intelligence Ltd. 2016. £16.58 / $40.98. Paperback. ISBN 1526200325.

The Cancer Revolution; The Future of Cancer Care, published on 21st April 2016, introduces the reader to a revolutionary way of looking at cancer: Integrative Medicine.  The Cancer Revolution is written by cancer expert Patricia Peat and 37 other highly respected expert contributors from a range of disciplines.  It acts as a guide to integrating complementary and conventional medicine for the treatment and care of cancer patients and is packed with strategies to improve prospects and quality of life.

The Cancer Revolution

An alarmingly high and relentlessly growing number of people are being affected, either directly or indirectly, by this deadly disease. They do not have the luxury of waiting for science to come up with ‘the cure’. They need answers right now. The Cancer Revolution has answers. Integrative Medicine is the broadest possible approach to treatment; one that leaves no stone unturned. It is more comfortable with doing ‘too much’ rather than taking the risk of missing a vital piece of the treatment puzzle.  It uses the best and latest knowledge available from both conventional and complementary medical disciplines. Integrative Medicine places the patient right at the centre, empowered and informed to make their own treatment choices from the broadest possible range of options. Safety is of primary concern, but beyond that, the patient’s own informed decisions outweigh any practitioner preference for conventional or complementary approaches.

In this important new handbook, Patricia Peat has assembled a world-class team of experts to offer practical information on nutrition, lifestyle, conventional medicine and a range of cutting-edge treatments, as well as helpful guidance for navigating through cancer and beyond. Sensible, straightforward, with self-help strategies and a host of material available online, this book is a must-read for anyone affected by cancer – whether directly or indirectly.

About the Author

Patricia Peat is the founder of Cancer Options, a consultancy supporting people in building personalised integrative programmes of cancer care. ‘The Cancer Revolution’ also includes chapters and information from 37 contributors – all of whom are respected experts in their fields with extensive experience helping those with cancer and their carers.

Campaign by Graeme Munro-Hall - Graeme <hallvtox@dircon.co.uk> To: MPs Ratify the Minimata Treaty proposal from the EU Commission but to phase out mercury dental amalgam rather than phase down mercury dental amalgam fillings as the EU Commission has suggested. [Insert Image: smoking_tooth.JPG] Why is this Important? The greatest source of human exposure to mercury is from dental amalgam fillings (WHO Report 118). The Minimata Treaty is to reduce exposure to mercury worldwide. The public consultation by the EU showed the public were 80% in favour of an immediate ban on mercury dental amalgam fillings but the EU has come down on the sides of the Dental Associations who want to keep using mercury. The alternatives to mercury as "Available, Affordable and Effective" (Swedish Chemical Agency 2009) and Norway (2009), Denmark and Sweden (2010) have banned the use of mercury fillings. Mercury from fillings harms the environment and there is no need to use it. Each EU member Government must now comment on the EU ratification proposal. The UK Government should ask for the phase out of mercury dental amalgam not a phase down. A phase down will allow the dentists who use mercury to continue to pollute our environment for years to come. I am a dentist who has not used mercury for 30 years. Mercury has no place in health care Further Information Sign the Petition at: http://community.sumofus.org/petitions/the-government-to-ratify-minimata-treaty-and-phase-out-mercury-amalgam-fillings

Ditch the White Stuff, the Brown Stuff and GABA Load of This!

Should you choose white rice over brown rice, or should you look to something completely different and try Minvita GABA rice?! Brown rice is often thought of as ‘good’ rice, and white rice ‘bad’ rice, but the truth is in terms of nutrient content the differences are negligible.

Minvita Rice Range Products

But what if there were a rice that was rich in nutrients that provided obvious health benefits? Well, this is where GABA rice comes in. People often cite brown rice as being higher in fibre and so leaves you feeling fuller longer than if you eat white rice, but as we saw in the example above, the fibre content is still relatively low. Well, just one 50g serving of Minvita Organic Sprouted Black GABA Rice provides 24% of your RDA of Fibre. That’s 3 times the amount of fibre in brown jasmine rice, and 6 times that of white rice.

GABA rice is considered as a superfood, in which researchers have found that a regular intake of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) helps improve nerve functioning, prevents the onset of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduces sleeplessness, relieves constipation, lowers blood pressure and prevents various types of digestive cancers. Rice germ also contains Gamma Oryzanol - an antioxidant that help prevent cancers and wrinkles from ageing.

GABA is an amino acid and the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. It inhibits the transmissions of nerve impulses and maintains a balance in the brain between excitation and inhibition, acting as a calming agent.

GABA rice is shown to help with :

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Stress-related fatigue
  • Memory and cognitive function
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Suppressing liver damage

Further Information

Available in three varieties, Jasmine, Black and Jasmine-Green Tea, this GABA rice is also known as Germinated Brown Rice (GBR). It’s made from top quality Thai jasmine and black wholegrain rice, harvested from paddy fields in Sisaket, Thailand. The rice is soaked for 24 hours, when the maximum possible nutrition level is reached, to stimulate germination, then parboiled, locking in the vitamins, nutrients and amino acids, especially gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA rice is available from Ocado, Whole Foods, Planet Organic, Revital and www.minvita.co.uk  priced £5.99 for 500g.

Discover Permanent Healing and Recovery with NeuroCranial Restructuring® - The Most Powerful & Revolutionary Therapy Existing in Physical Medicine Today

Clinically developed and tested over the past 35 years NeuroCranialRestructuring® (NCR®) is a cumulative manipulation process involving controlled release of the body’s connective tissue tension to unwind the body and return it towards its original design. NCR® utilizes careful analysis of the body’s proprioception (patterns of balance) to determine the precise areas of the skull needing to be unlocked. With the addition of careful body positioning to increase the tension in the meninges and other connective tissues, the entire skeletal structure can be permanently changed with this kind of skull manipulation. This unlocking of the connective tissues’ residual tensions combined with precise movements of the cranial bones allow the structural systems of the body to move incrementally and cumulatively towards the body’s original design. The miraculous results of this therapy has brought new life and healing in the lives of more than 60,000 patients who had previously deemed untreatable by mainstream medicine.
