A Beginner’s Guide to Lifting Depression
by Leslie O Simpson PhD and Nancy Blake BA CQSW
Published by Lifelight Publishing. 2015. Paperback. £5.99. ISBN 0957181760.
Depression is an illness that takes lives. Forget the myth that those who threaten never do it; almost everyone who takes their own life has told someone that they might. Take it too seriously and you may be embarrassed for a while; fail to take it seriously and you may regret it for the rest of your life. If a person intends to make themself dead, they can do it in almost any circumstances. If a person is telling you they are afraid that they might, there is at least a part of them that wants to be stopped. It is never your responsibility to stop them, but get what help you can. (It isn’t your responsibility to treat an accident victim, but you can call an ambulance.)
Depression isn’t always life threatening, and despite the serious and complex nature of this illness, there are practical steps you can take to feel better, and some of them are quite simple.
A Beginner's Guide to Lifting Depression offers two approaches which you are unlikely to find elsewhere. Doctors aren't taught haemorheology, the physical properties of blood. But many chronic disorders, including depression, are characterized by blood flow problems, and there are relatively simple and available supplements and medical treatments which can improve blood flow and lift mood. Nutritional supplements address the underlying problem...most psychoactive drugs simply suppress the symptoms.
Your counsellor or psychotherapist is very likely to offer you CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), which is widely used and very popular. But it only touches the surface. That inner critical voice - CBT tells you not to believe it. NLP teaches you how to control it. (Why argue with a radio - change the channel , or turn it off!)
Some NLP ideas are so simple that they sound ridiculous: Do you have thoughts that are ‘just going round and round’, and you wish you could just switch them off? Many people have a gesture showing ‘round and round’. Find that gesture, notice which way round your hand is moving. Once you are sure of the direction, now draw the circle in the opposite direction and notice what happens. Not easy to believe that switching them off could be that simple!
Depressed people are usually kind, unselfish, generous....giving so much energy to others is draining, but saying no seems impossible. You don’t have to say ‘no’, you can say ‘I’d be delighted to do it!...... next week’, or ‘when I’ve finished this’, or ‘for an hour’...or even ‘when you’ve.....’gone to the AA’, ‘saved up the money’, ‘seen the doctor about it’
And your next challenge is to.......accept a compliment!!
Les Simpson and I really want to help...depression may tell you otherwise, but you deserve happiness in your life, and our book can show you some of the steps along the way.

Norsan Omega-3 Range from New Vistas
The burden of chronic disease continues to rise, according to the World Health Organization. Within this, we see widespread inflammatory responses; the body's way of attempting to regulate balance in an environment burdened by toxicity and deficiency. Improved diet choices can help improve symptoms by nourishing cellular responses. Autoimmune, skin and neurodegenerative disorders require an adequate daily intake of high-quality omega-3 essential oils. Norsan's Omega-3 Total (200ml), a light and pleasant-tasting fish oil, contains 2000mg of Omega-3 fatty acids, needed to regulate deficiency and an unbalanced omega-6/3 ratio. Following over 3000 fatty acid analysis tests, results have shown that 2000mg of this premium oil can help correct this imbalance.
While we all appreciate and understand the importance of omega-3 supplementation for supporting cognitive and heart function, maintaining normal blood fat, healthy vision and optimal joint health, it is the ethical sourcing and production which makes this quality food supplement stand out. Produced in Norway, Norsan's Total Fish Oil is the culmination of over ten years of research and collaboration. Norsan is the first company to use the integrated fatty acid method, which utilises the measurement, analysis and regulation of fatty acids in the body. In 2015, they were approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology as an omega-3 preparation selected for the study of Structural and functional changes of the neural system of the aging brain.
Norsan uses a complex manufacturing process to respect and enhance our natural environment. Certified by the sustainable fisheries 'Friends of the Sea', they ensure their products are not from over-fished stocks and endangered species are not threatened as by-catch. They are committed to energy-efficient production and reducing practices which negatively impact the ecosystem.
Norsan's fish oil is also certified by the GOED, ensuring purification from pollutants and PCBs. Regular analysis at Eurofins, Hamburg, the leading laboratory for heavy metal analysis, supports these findings. The degree of oxidation of omega-3 products is indicated by TOTOX value, which demonstrates the freshness of the oil. Norsan consistently show low levels of total oxidation value, ensuring a dependable, high-quality supplement.
Customer feedback has already established Omega-3 Total as a resourceful and worthy investment for well-being. It is recommended by doctors and top athletes. Taking 1 tablespoon daily can help improve the signs of ageing, ease discomfort from rheumatic conditions and encourage optimal cognitive skills. It is easy to take and can be used creatively as part of a daily healthy-eating regime. Norsan also provide Omega-3 Vegan (100ml), a unique combination of high-strength algae oil and cold-pressed olive oil as well as individual Fatty Acid Analysis assessments for self-testing.
Omega-3 Total, for life balance and good health.

Winter Warmer - Herbal Blend from Health Leads UK
Many herbs and natural compounds are traditionally associated with support during the Winter months. Lemon is a favourite, a staple that is highly recommended, but is probably taken once a cold has ‘taken hold’ as is the case with many products. So we researched to ascertain the best possible combination to strengthen the body’s defences and offer additional support before Winter infections burden us.
After research we settled on a blend of Fenugreek seed, Echinacea, Cinnamon, Thyme, Sage, Cayenne and Black Cumin seed. Some of us at Health leads have been taking 2 capsules per day for several weeks now and have been pleased and surprised with the results. Three people experienced the very first symptoms of a cold which then did not progress. We cannot of course be dogmatic but we are now convinced that this variation on traditional herbals has great value. As cold season encompasses Autumn, Winter and Spring we believe this blend of herbs could be beneficial to use for much of the year.

Courses in Craniosacral Therapy and Homotoxicology from Turning Point Training
Turning Point Training offers postgraduate courses in Craniosacral Therapy and Homotoxicology. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds both in conventional and holistic disciplines. This allows an exchange of information and experience that enriches the learning experience.
From Left to Right: Karen Devine, Jonathan Lawrence, Rosemary Lawrence, Craniosacral Course 2017
Courses are mixture of leading-edge, scientifically based theory and clinical and practical tuition. Students are encouraged to explore and develop their gifts and talents in bringing their unique experience to the disciplines taught. Students are thus empowered. Small groups help to facilitate this experience. Turning Point teachers are enthusiastic and experienced practising therapists who keep their knowledge up to date. The philosophy of Turning Point encompasses the idea that medicine is an art informed by science. We believe that the conventional materialist paradigm is very much out of date and that scientific knowledge has now reached a point where much of holistic medicine can incorporated into a new paradigm. Turning Point courses introduce the concepts of research and encourage students to critically evaluate current information.
- Craniosacral therapy is based on the relation of the relationship between the structure and function of the body and health. Specific, gentle and skilled manipulation can restore the structure-function relationship supporting the patients’ own homeostatic mechanisms. This non-invasive and safe therapy can be used on patients of all ages from the new-born to the elderly.
The Level 1 Practitioner Course consists of 7 modules over 8 days including practical tuition. In addition students have to complete a portfolio of cases and complete a number of assignments. Practical skills are assessed during the course. This course is recognized by the CMA. This is taught by Jonathan Lawrence and experience lecturer and osteopath.
Level 2 consists of one day workshops and assignments in specialized areas: Mother and Baby; Facial and Dental; Visceral; Physical and Emotional Trauma and Immune System and Lymphatics. A planned Level Three will consist of a dissertation on an aspect of craniosacral work. - Homotoxicology is based on the idea that disease results from toxic load. In modern life we are subject to toxins from a variety of sources. This has the effect of stressing the immune system leading to ill health. Accurate prescribing can help the body to gently detoxify aiding the restoration of homeostasis.
The remedies uses are may be single potency homeopathic remedies or combinations of remedies to achieve a specific physiological response.
A Diploma Course in Homotoxicology and Bioregulatory medicine in association with the Society of Homotoxicology is led by experience Homotoxicologist, Nutritionist and lecturer, Karen Devine. This course takes place over a year with 6 weekends tuition. 5 specialist tutors from Nutrition, Osteopathy, Herbal Medicine and Iridology and Homeopathy will each be teaching on the weekends.

Telecoms killing us and making sick is one issue, but exterminating the Bees all over the world takes this issue to another level. The article Cell Towers, Mobiles Spell Doom for Honey Bees from the Hans India tells the truth about the Bee collapse. I have read many articles where pesticides have been blamed, and I would agree that pesticides does makes many Bee's sick and even kill lots, but pesticides are not the Bee exterminator, Telecoms High Frequency Radiation Dishes are the Bee exterminator. If you want more proof, go to:-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h59ONN2hJ_k
Resonance beings of frequency video, 14.50 minutes in will show you a test in which cordless dect phones were placed in 4 of 8 hives, and the Bee's don’t come home in the hives with a dect phone.
Our planet Earths frequency is about 7.83Htz and life on this planet is dependent on this natural frequency, take it away and all life will die on this planet, introducing man-made stronger frequencies confuses and disrupts the signals our biological systems are dependent on, causing sickness and death. A Telecoms cell phone dish emits a frequency anywhere between 5 and 25Ghz which is thousands of times more powerful than natural frequency.
Did you know that Industry are developing a robotic Bee, to be introduced to areas of extermination. I can’t think of any words powerful enough to describe how so wrong all this is?

The Mercury and Amalgam Filling Controversy - Munro Hall Clinic
In the wake of a recent European parliament ruling, banning the use of amalgam in children from next year, you would be wise to take a fresh look at this topic, and ask how this has come about and why is it not prohibited for adults? Why is the UK not taking this kind of decision? If one forms an opinion that “it can’t be all that bad”, we need to then ask why the UK government have decided for dentists to reduce the amount of amalgam they use, rather than phase it out. It seems that we have decided to not draw too much attention to this topic, but may perhaps see a very gradual decline over the next decade, rather than an immediate restriction of its use.
Scientific studies over the years have documented the potential risks amalgam fillings pose to human health. All ‘Silver’ fillings contain 45%-55% mercury; it has been firmly demonstrated that it is emitted into the body, having been measured in the blood and emitted to various organs. This is measured at higher levels in individuals that grind their teeth as well as regularly drink hot beverages. This can be simulated in the mouth and measured with a mercury vapour testing machine, which is part of our consultation procedure at Munro Hall Clinic. But why is this test of relevance?
Well, over 80% of metallic mercury is absorbed by the lungs and redistributed to other organs. What then? The half-life of the mercury is very much varied in each organ. What’s most interesting is that the half-life of mercury in the brain can be up to decades compared to that of kidneys for example, which is estimated to be around 60 days. This brings us to mercury and the scientifically documented connection to neurological disorders. Each person reacts differently and this is why not all react with neurological disorders, but perhaps with other type of reactions. While an array of co-existing factors influence what kind of reactions each individual’s biology undertakes, it’s safe to say that the fact mercury vapour is lipid soluble, and can cross the blood-brain barrier with ease has a level of relevance.
The good news is that mercury that may exist within the brain can be bound to Glutathione as well as Selenium. These resulting compounds that have absorbed mercury, are flushed out of the body relatively quickly, preventing it from being stored in any organ or having any cellular impact.
This is the theory behind our decision at the clinic to incorporate Glutathione and Selenium among many other supplements in our detoxification program in preparation for the safe amalgam removal protocol we apply. These are also included in the intravenous high dose vitamin C infusions we provide parallel with the dental procedure. Vitamin C deserves a whole chapter dedicated to with high relevance to the subject matter.

The Possible Role for Mushroom Nutrition in Celiac Disease
The latest studies on the aetiology of Celiac Disease (CD) provide fresh opportunities to explore the role of mushroom nutrition in the protection of the gut from the pro-inflammatory stimuli. The rationale behind this assertion is two-fold;
- The Dectin-1 receptor contributes (along with changes in gut barrier function and the transferrin receptor-TfR) to the uptake of gliadin peptides by the lamina propria and
- Mushroom-derived β-glucans might directly modulate macrophage activity (phenotype) by up-regulating autophagy.
The hypothesis is that mushroom nutrition will target enterocyte Dectin-1 receptors, decreasing the uptake of antigens; in other words mushroom-derived β-glucans will compete for binding with the 33-mer form of gliadin peptide to the Dectin-1 receptor.
Figure 1 - β-glucans out-compete gliadin for binding to the Dectin-1 receptor
Figure 2 - the NLRP3 inflammasome drives inflammation or autophagy depending on the environment
Further to this, recent studies have demonstrated that β-glucans, acting via the Dectin-1 receptor, upregulate autophagy (Ohman et al., 2014). The process of autophagy is fundamental to cellular homeostasis and in particular to maintaining the immune system in a state of tolerance. So not only is the activity of the autophagosomal-lysosomal pathway essential to maintaining the regulatory phenotype of T lymphocytes (Treg cells) (Wei et al., 2016) it is also important in maintaining macrophages in what is termed an alternatively activated form or M2 (as opposed to a pro-inflammatory M1 form).
In a study to investigate the effect of a high fat diet (HFD) on autophagy in macrophages, Liu et al, (2015) demonstrated impaired macrophage autophagy in obese mice. They also demonstrated that knockout of essential autophagy genes enhanced systemic and liver inflammation when mice were fed a HFD in combination with lipopolysaccharide. By measuring gene and protein expression within Kupffer cells (liver macrophage-like cells) and other macrophages, they were able to demonstrate that this effect was due to a change in phenotype from an M2-like, alternative activated form, to a pro-inflammatory M1 type.
The apparent role of the Dectin-1 receptor in activating inflammatory pathways as well as activating autophagy (a process that is often considered as anti-inflammatory) may be explained by the observations that inflammasomes, that are activated early in the inflammatory response, also seem to be involved in autophagy.
The knock-out of the NLRP6 inflammasome blocks autophagy in intestinal goblet cells (Wlodarska et al., 2014) and blockade of NLRP3 function decreases lipopolysaccharide induced inflammatory cytokine expression and increases autophagy in macrophages (Abderrazak et al., 2015). These findings open up the exciting possibility that mushroom-derived β-glucans might up-regulate autophagy in gut-associated macrophages and in so doing, increase tolerance to food derived antigens such as gliadin. So not only might mushroom nutrition reduce the likelihood of developing Celiac disease in genetically susceptible individuals, it may be helpful as nutritional support during the early stages of a gluten free diet.

The Lauterstein-Conway Massage School
The Lauterstein-Conway Massage School is considered a ‘legacy school’ in the US. This reputation comes from the founders’ educational approach, therapeutic philosophy, and the longevity of the school. The origins of the curriculum began with the Anatomy Training Program (ATP) that David Lauterstein taught at the Chicago School of Massage Therapy in 1982.
This program evolved into an advanced training in “Deep Massage - the Lauterstein Method”. Meanwhile David had moved to Austin, Texas and met John Conway, himself a superb massage therapist and teacher. They joined forces and in 1989 started their school. Both David and John had concentrated on the humanities in their earlier studies – David with a degree in music composition, John with his in English literature. So they brought a singular perspective to bodywork teaching - emphasizing the art as much as the science.
The basic 500-hour curriculum focuses on getting anatomy not only in your mind, but in your hands: practical applications of physiology and kinesiology (especially noting the impact of massage on the nervous system); self-care; business skills, training in Swedish massage, hydrotherapy, deep tissue, sports massage, Deep Massage, orthopedic massage, pregnancy massage, and massage with other special populations.
TLC has also offers a 250-hour Advanced Program for therapists who want a higher level of skill in structural and energetic approaches. This includes training in Zero Balancing, shiatsu, psychology of bodywork, Certifications in Orthopedic assessment and in Deep Massage and advanced session design.
Each year TLC also offers over 300 hours of workshops - in 2018 planned trainings include: oncology massage, reflexology, Thai massage, manual lymph drainage (48 hour certification), hot stone, clinical massage for lower back, piriformis, meridian massage, Deep Massage Intensive and the iliopsoas, Myofascial Release Certification, pre and perinatal massage leading to certification, Zero Balancing, cadaver workshops (in conjunction with Texas State University), Dermoneuromodulation, Lomi Lomi, Structural Essentials, Fan of the Hip, Anatomy Trains, chair massage, aromatherapy, and more!
One of the main texts used in the basic and advanced programs is David Lauterstein’s The Deep Massage Book: How to Combine Structure and Energy in Bodywork. Lauterstein’s most recent book is Life in the Bones: A Biography of Dr. Fritz Smith and Zero Balancing published by the Upledger Institute. In addition to teaching at TLC, his Deep Massage and Zero Balancing 2018 workshops are planned for Austin, Tucson, Arizona, Frederick, Maryland, Ireland, Bristol, Maine and Costa Rica.

A Personal Journey of Self-Discovery - The Alexander Technique
by Antonella Cavallone BA MSTAT CNHC
Teacher of Alexander Technique at Bloomsbury Alexander Centre
It is a beautiful late summer day; I am in Istanbul a city I love, with my partner. We have been to Hagias Sofia in the morning and decided for a dip in an open thermal bath Spa followed by dinner in a tiny restaurant on the bosforous. I woke up the morning after and I cannot turn my head sideway - my neck is frozen in a spasm of pain. I blame myself for catching a draft at the bath and soldier on through the city. The pain was still there a week later on my return to London and l was still in pain a week after that.
The sudden appearance of excruciating neck pain repeated itself four times over a year and no amount of intervention was able to get rid of it for good - the pain, came back. I was at the end of my tether when a friend suggested I try the Alexander Technique. I booked my first lesson; serendipity brought me to the Bloomsbury Alexander Centre, a centre of expertise for the Alexander Technique in London. I learned that my very poor overall posture had contributed to my neck vertebrae finally giving up trying to support my pocking head. With a newly acquired better postural balance my neck pain was gone within a month of taking twice a week sessions in Alexander Technique. This was almost ten years ago; I have since trained to become a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique and have been teaching at the Bloomsbury Alexander Technique Centre, one of the oldest established Alexander Technique practises in London, established since 1986.
Antonella Cavallone giving an individual lesson
About the Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique has been established in the UK for over a century; FM Alexander, its originator, was born in 1869. A successful actor of the Shakespearian tradition in his native Australia, he developed the Technique after finding himself troubled by hoarseness on stage. After lengthy self-observation, “FM” (as the Technique’s community know him to this day) concluded that poor physical habits were the root of his troubles. As he tensed his neck and pulled his head back, his exaggerated movements and muscular tension disrupted his breathing rhythm and put pressure on his vocal cords, creating his vocal problem.
The Alexander Technique is not a quick fix. At its root is a method of neuromuscular re-education affecting the entire musculoskeletal system. Learning and applying the Technique leads to improvement in mobility, postural balance and tonus – coordination is enhanced and functioning becomes more efficient. In a one to one lesson Alexander teachers observe how you use your body in order to identify focal points of strain and mal-coordination. For instance, faulty mechanics of movement such as white-knuckle gripping, shoulder-led reaching, bending down and forward at the back rather than at the hip joints are subjected to repetition and are compounded by underlining poor general posture. We then teach you through verbal and physical instructions to adopt a more efficient posture. The Alexander Technique helps the person to recognize bad habits and postural malcoordination and can teach how to discard those and achieve better posture and coordination. In time one is able to remove interferences in body-use and improve body awareness in their everyday life, increasing their level of wellbeing.

Published by Lotus Publishing. 2017. £14.99. ISBN: 978 1 905367 81 8.
Book Description
An essential self-help guide to treatment of chronic pain based on myofascial release.
This indispensable self-help guide is for anyone suffering from chronic pain and struggling to understand why standard medical approaches have failed them. Taking a mind-body approach, the book clearly and simply explains how chronic pain develops, and why an understanding of fascia - the main connective tissue in the body - is the key to restoring pain-free movement and health. Author and myofascial release expert Amanda Oswald informs readers about the role of fascia in chronic pain and empowers them to help themselves through simple and effective self-care techniques, stretches, and exercises.
Living Pain Free is a must-read for anyone experiencing chronic pain from conditions including migraines and headaches, repetitive strain injury (RSI), jaw (TMJ) pain, frozen shoulder, neck and back pain, chronic pelvic pain, scar tissue, and systemic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and myofascial pain syndrome. It will also benefit anyone interested in understanding chronic pain from a myofascial perspective.
