Sports Massage - About so Much More than Sport
I [Justin Johnson] don’t think of myself as particularly sporty. Like most people, I try to keep fit. I run a bit and I have the good fortune to be able to swap treatments (I’m an osteopath) for personal training sessions with my neighbour, who’s a professional trainer. It sounds keen on paper, but I’m a pretty reluctant athlete.
However, I’ve just been on holiday that involved one week of extreme actively and a high risk of injury. I went skiing. Our group consisted of all ages from 20-somethings to the retired and all abilities from beginners to crazy speed freaks. In terms of fitness, we ranged from the seriously sporty to some (most?) who rarely walk further than the car.
Despite these differences and the mountainous landscapes, skiing is a fairly level playing field for injury. Everyone in our group experienced pain at the end of the first day – squashed feet, boot-bruised shins or (hopefully not) something worse. By the end of one week, the only serious injury our group had sustained was one broken collar bone. For 50 people on a skiing holiday, that’s a good average!
The great thing about Sports Massage is that everyone on the trip could benefit from treatment: massage to those calves and shins, traction to those lower backs compressed by G-forces, release to those shoulders, tense with cold and concentration. Even poor Dave’s broken collar-bone, once he’s healed a bit, will benefit from sports massage and re-hab.
A good sports masseur can:
- Assess posture and identify common patterns of dysfunction, relating to both sports and everyday activities;
- Use a wide range of manual therapy and sports massage techniques;
- Devise treatment plans that are specifically aimed at individual needs;
- Treat athletes both before and after activity, as well as maintaining athletes during training;
- Devise a specific plan of exercises, designed to re-habilitate or strengthen – for anyone, sporty or not.
Sports Massage can be used to treat any musculo-skeletal problem, including back pain, tight shoulders, a stiff neck, as well as tennis elbow, runner’s knee, a skier’s shin or Dave’s shoulder.
Despite the name, Sports Massage is very definitely not just for sports people.
Accredited Massage Courses Ltd teaches ITEC Sports Massage at Level 3 and Level 4, with courses starting at various times throughout the year.

Protecting your Business with Professional Indemnity Cover
Starting your own business can be an exciting time, but also challenging, particularly with the associated setup costs. We all know, things don’t always go 100% to plan, no matter how diligent we may be. It is important to remember that you don’t have to do anything wrong, it just takes someone to allege that you have and you may still need to defend yourself.
One of Towergate’s specialist advisors, Faith Chapman, an expert in Complementary Health insurance explains why professional indemnity and public liability insurance is essential to professionals like yourself and how Towergate can provide both within one policy.
Professional Indemnity cover will protect you against any claims made against you should you be accused of Professional Negligence; this can include things such as incorrect advice or recommendations, breach of professional code of conduct, loss of documents or breach of confidentiality. A client could allege that as a result of a recommendation you made in a session, they suffered an adverse effect and as a result have been harmed. This type of policy will cover costs to defend you against this allegation, and ultimately if the client is successful in suing you, will pay out the damages awarded.
Public Liability cover will protect you in the event of any claims made in respect of accidental injury or damage to a client or a member of the public, and it also covers loss or damage to public property. If for example you accidentally spilt coffee on a client’s laptop this would be covered or if a client were to trip over whilst visiting you, this policy would cover the legal costs to defend you, and again pay out if the client was successful in suing you.
At Towergate Insurance our Professional Liability policy provides cover for both Professional Indemnity and Public Liability meaning you only need one policy to be covered for both eventualities, giving you peace of mind. Also included in the policy are 24 hour legal and health & wellbeing helplines, for those times when you may need some extra support.
Whether you need protection against allegations of libel or slander, or cover against accusations of professional negligence, our insurance will protect you against the expense and worry associated with legal action being sought against you. Our experience, coupled with a strong track record means we are well placed to assist you in achieving an effective and efficient settlement, allowing you to focus on your job.
With affordable rates starting from £70*, visit our website and get yourself protected in as little as 5 minutes.
*All cover subject to insurers underwriting criteria. Full terms and conditions available upon request. £70 is based on £1million cover, claims free, turnover not exceeding £70,000 and purchased online.

Robert Gray - A Cleanse to Fit the Modern Lifestyle!
In our modern society we are pressed for time; convenience has become essential in our everyday living habits. Needless to say though, our wellbeing cannot be considered a ‘convenience’ Robert Gray, a renowned nutritional counsellor and author, stated that every man, woman and child living in modern society today is constipated whether they know it or not. To understand such a statement the word constipated fully understood is derived from the Latin root “constipare” which means to press together.
We are all at some point going to experience digestive discomfort, poor nourishment and general feelings of lethargic inactivity as a result of a poor diet/ digestion. Some of us will suddenly kick into motion and believe it time to do something about our diets; but the process is slow if not futile at best because by this time the digestive system is so clogged up, over-acidic and completely incapable of absorbing any good nutrition due to mild or even heavy compaction.
The only sensible action would be to eliminate the colonic compaction but in order to do this one often needs severe if not unpleasant cleansing that is difficult to confront. So many programmes available for effective ‘colon sweeping’ require a lot of maintenance resulting in severe detox symptoms and due to the fast paced lifestyles we lead there simply isn’t time to take down-time…
The Digestive system should be seen as a long flexible tube which starts from the mouth and ends at the rectum. The major organs included in this process of ‘digestion’ are the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum. Every ounce of our welbeing physically depends on the effective working order of this very sophisticated system.
Most foods create mucoid material which passes from the body in the normal elimination process but some of this remains in the colon clinging to the walls creating plaque which becomes the ideal breeding ground for parasitic infestations as well as toxins leading to a very common problem called ‘toxic colon’.
Our Bestcare Holistic Horizons™ brand of colon cleansing products are the only colon hygiene products formulated and approved by noted nutritional counselor and author, Robert Gray. In his ground-breaking book, The Colon Health Handbook, his extensive experience, knowledge and expertise were brought to bear on the problem of formulating the very best natural colon cleansing program. Our products are the formulae he developed to implement "The Robert Gray Intestinal Cleansing Program". Not only does our program cleanse the colon mildly and gently, but it also promotes the growth of healthy colonies of beneficial and friendly lactobacteria.
All of our products are made from the very highest quality ingredients. They have been proven effective over more than two decades of use by thousands of users world-wide. Each batch of product produced is tested for purity and quality.

Getting Sick Is No Accident
A super controversial title, I know, but let me just lay out my justifications for that:
There is a well-known saying: it’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back. The story is that there is a young strong camel, a beast of burden, and on its’ back is a bag of gold, a sack of coal, a cage of chickens, a barrel of oil and a kitchen sink. Yet it is a strong animal, although it is now heavily burdened and then a puff of wind blows a straw onto the camel’s back and it’s just that bit too much weight and the camel collapses.
To get the camel back on its’ feet we must remove the bag of gold, the sack of coal, the cage of chickens, the barrel of oil and the kitchen sink, and then the camel will be able to start walking again.
People are like that: we go through life acquiring burdens or stress factors, sometimes we start life with stress factors – perhaps mother drank too much alcohol, not enough water, took too many or even any drugs, too many fizzy drinks or ate the wrong foods and not enough of the right foods and so on, we know the possibilities. So, our new human came into the world already burdened. A bit. But he’s young and strong and copes.
Life goes on. Our young person receives vaccines, containing mercury, aluminium and other toxins. He gets a few ear infections, treated with anti-biotics which disturb his gut flora. He receives mercury amalgam fillings (more mercury), cooks in aluminium foil and uses anti-perspirants (more aluminium), uses sunscreen (contains cadmium, particles of which enter the body), has more vaccines. He lives in a house with plug-in chemical-based air aromarisers. He lives in a sea of electro-pollution. He consumes his own weight in food colourings. He eats too low in fats or too high in bad fats. He breaks a bone and has some x-rays (radiation is forever – look it up). He eats pesticide-laden foods. He is a car mechanic and gets a lot of oils etc. on his hands (skin is not waterproof). He drinks water with fluoride. He works with asbestos. He gets married (stress – another burden), has children (more stress), he gets divorced (more stress).This paragraph could go on a long time but you get the picture. He acquires burdens.
Then, one day he is diagnosed with cancer, motor neurone disease, arthritis, asthma, eczema, migraines, heart disease, any disease you care to name. That disease/ailment is a consequence of too many burdens/stress factors on his/the camel’s back. There may even be stress factors that no one has identified, bearing in mind that some of the above stress factors are somewhat controversial in certain circles.
It is not an accident.

GDPR, Record Keeping and your Business - Info from Balens
As you may be aware there is a new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force on 25th May 2018, that will affect any business (including privately practicing Therapists) that processes personal data - defined as ‘any information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified in particular by reference to an identifier’ - www.ico.org.uk
If you record personal details about individuals, i.e. a therapist recording details of a client’s session, you will have to comply. There are a number of new systems and processes that the Act requires, including the introduction of Privacy Notices (which will need to be given to clients at the time that you take their data). There are also enhanced rights for the data subjects (individuals who the data relates to), which may require changes to the way you manage your business.
Record Keeping
We at Balens have been contacted by many practitioners requesting guidance on how long they should keep their client record in light of the GDPR requirements and what happens if a client requests that their data is erased under their ‘right of erasure’?
The Statute of Limitations in the UK (i.e. time when an individual is able to bring a claim) is 6 years for certain injury claims, or 6 years after the individual reaches the age of majority in the case of minors. Your records are your best line of defence in any claim situation, and it is important that all key information is noted and kept to defend you. Indeed it is part of Balens Policy Terms that records are kept for at least 7 years following the last occasion on which treatment was given (or at least 7 years after they reach the age of majority (18) when treating minors). There are also instances when these Statutes of Limitation may be overturned, hence our Managing Directors longstanding recommendation to keep client records indefinitely.
The GDPR allows for this, specifically noting that you are able to refuse an individual’s request for erasure when you require the information to defend yourself in a potential claim situation. When can I refuse to comply with the right of erasure). The Act itself does not define how long records must be kept, but as part of the ‘Accountability’ requirements you need to demonstrate your considerations and justify your decision making as to how long you keep your client records.
Further Information
The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has some very useful guides available on its website and whilst the information can seem daunting and very complex, a bit like the ancient proverb related to a ‘journey of a thousand miles …’, if you approach the requirements one step at a time, the complexity becomes more manageable. Equally, don’t leave it too late to get to grips with the requirements of the Act, as there may be a lot you will need to do in order to comply.

Jacqueline’s Diary - When Cancer Came to Visit
by Jacqueline Clara Shephard
Published by PublishNation. 2015. Softback. £8.99. ISBN 978-1-326-49576-3.
Cancer Survivor’s Book Hits Top of Charts
A chance encounter with a world-famous cat led to cancer survivor Jacqueline Shephard penning a chart-topping account of her ordeals. The 53-year-old secretary from London survived a lengthy battle with the disease almost a decade ago.
Her touching, yet humorous, diaries from throughout her treatments were turned into Jacqueline’s Diary after she met A Street Cat Called Bob owner James Bowen. Jacqueline explained: “I think my greatest achievement has been to write Jacqueline’s Diary and actually get it published.
“It was borne out of really tragic circumstances, but I managed to come through that, write the book and get it published… that is a major achievement considering I nearly died three times in one month.
“It was only after I had the illness, I felt inspired to write my experiences down and James from Bob the Cat, made me realise I to could get my work published.
“I actually met James and Bob on the streets of Covent Garden just as they were writing their book.
“He inspired me to get my book published.”
Jacqueline’s Diary has reached number one of Amazon’s medical biography charts. The moving account of fighting cancer is already proving inspirational to readers. Jacqueline continued: “The message I want to send out to people with cancer is that it doesn't have to be a death sentence. People do come through it and live a life.
“Do as much as you can for yourself to heal yourself throughout the treatment and beyond. Jacqueline's Diary also has a lot of practical information that may help people.
“Cancer makes you take a good hard look at yourself, it’s a life changer.”
After being given her own cat during recovery from treatments, Jacqueline is now considering her own feline follow-up. She added: “My friend gave me a kitten which has helped me to heal and I now want to write up a book about the cat and how he helped me.”
Since the publication of Jacqueline’s Diary is has attracted five-star reader reviews. Paul Searle stated: “During research for information for a family member I came across this little gem. “I am sure that this book will help others to realize that they are not alone; there are other people who have been through the same situation.”
Monica Baxter said: “This is something that the NHS should sit up and take note on how best to treat their patients.”

Goji Berries are Back
A decade ago they were one of the first fruits hailed as a ‘superfood’, but ten years on, they have dropped off many shopping lists. Recent research shows this may be a mistake as they could help with a host of age related health issues…
Several studies[1,2] published in recent months have highlighted the potential of extracts from goji berries to help prevent neurodegeneration in the brain, the process of our brains aging. Scientists have discovered that certain natural chemicals in the berries appear able to protect cells in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which is associated with memory, specifically longer term memory.
This ability to help prevent some of the signs of aging may not to be confined to the brain and another study,[3] published in January, showed goji berry extracts slowing down the degeneration of photoreceptor cells in the eye.
A further study, published this month,[4] highlights the berries’ potential ability to protect against osteoporosis. Researchers discovered that extracts from the berries were able to prevent the death of osteoblasts (specialist cells found in bone which help make and reshape bone) caused by a chemical that mimics part of the process of osteoporosis.
There are those who don’t like the phrase ‘superfood’, but taken together these studies certainly show goji berries to be a very beneficial food! Gojis are a versatile ingredient that can be used in a similar way to raisins or sultanas, whether as an ingredient in cakes and muffins, an addition to crunchy salads or eaten on their own as a tasty snack.

What’s Making Our Children SICK? - How Industrial Food is Causing an Epidemic
of Chronic Illness, and What Parents (and Doctors) Can Do About It
by Michelle Perro MD and Vincanne Adams PhD
Published by Chelsea Green Publishing. 2018. Softback. £16.20. $16.22. ISBN 1603587578.
A radical rethinking of the relationships between our children’s food, medicine, and health in the twenty-first century
The Problem
Children across the Western world are struggling with a new wave of chronic health problems that simply didn’t exist several decades ago. Michelle Perro MD a veteran paediatrician with over thirty-five years’ experience successfully treating children, and Vincanne Adams PhD believe the following facts have contributed to this epidemic:
- Chronic exposure of children to poisons in their environment, especially from foods produced by our modern industrial food system;
- Outdated models of clinical care and disease causation;
- A scientific community that is embattled when it comes to food-health science.
The Solution
What’s Making Our Children Sick? presents a roadmap to help parents, practitioners, and health educators navigate the current landscape - from new knowledge about the microbiology of gut health, to a review of scientific studies on the effects of glyphosate and other pesticides, to the clinical experiences of doctors who are trying to treat children with chronic, hard-to-diagnose health problems.
Woven throughout the narrative are case studies of patients that demonstrate the effectiveness of a food-focused approach to medicine, specifically organic food. They also showcase the various diagnostic tests and treatment methods that are available in an integrative doctor’s toolkit when the goal is to find the root cause of a problem, rather than prioritizing drugs to alleviate the symptoms.
The book serves as a resource for others who are trying to connect the dots between agro-industrial food and poor health, and offers a template for larger social and political change on issues of food health, -children’s well-being, and the future of medicine.
About the Authors
Michelle Perro MD is a paediatrician with over thirty-five years’ experience in acute and integrative medicine. She is a former director of the Pediatric Emergency Department at New York’s Metropolitan Hospital, and has her own practice.
Vincanne Adams PhD is a professor and vice-chair of medical anthropology at the University of California, San Francisco. She is the author of six previous books, and is editor-in-chief of Medical Anthropology Quarterly.

On Smaller Dogs and Larger Life Questions
by Kate Figes
Published by Virago. 2018. Hardback £13.48; Kindle £7.99. ISBN 0349011028.
From one of Britain’s best-loved journalists writes about living with a life-threatening disease to give us an intelligent and passionate look at the way we can approach disappointment and trouble, friendship and love – every day.
Coming up to her sixtieth birthday, Kate Figes found herself turning to the larger questions of family, love and life’s meaning. It is like this author to examine different stages in writing, and her books - from new motherhood and adolescence to coupledom and infidelity - testify to this way of understanding herself and others: so naturally she turned to writing to explore the challenges of becoming sixty. And then - a horrible, and sudden diagnosis of breast cancer which has metastasised.
In her usual fashion, Kate examines different life’s stages in writing and her books and coming up to sixty, she found herself turning to the larger questions of family, love, life’s meaning, all at the same time as the arrival of a demanding new puppy. Then - a horrible, and sudden diagnosis of breast cancer which has metastasised. Instead of a gentle journey into middle-age, Kate began to write for her life. Her writing became an honest reflection of the struggles of ageing, failing, regrets, and, just as crucially, memories of childhood and the importance of friends, family and love (and - as the title suggests, a dog!).
Instead of a gentle journey into middle age, Kate Figes began to write for her life. Now, clawing back confidence and control was not just the ordinary business of these years: it was the only way to try and survive great pain and emotional turmoil. As her writing became an honest reflection on aging, falling, regrets and the important of childhood memory, friends, family and love, she found a new determination to live to the full and about finding ways to face up to a shortened life expectancy with dignity.
Original, passionate, funny and moving, On Smaller Dogs and Larger Life Questions will resonate with anyone dealing with the many griefs and freedoms of midlife.
Kate Figes is the author of five previous works of non-fiction: The Big Fat Bitch Book, Life After Birth, The Terrible Teens: What Every Parent Needs to Know and Couples: How We Make Love Last, Our Cheating Heart: Love and Loyalty, Lust and Lies, as well as two novels. She is married with two children and lives in London.

Welcome to The Royal Jelly Company - Where your Health Matters
Royal Jelly is produced by worker bees for their Queen and has been used for centuries to enhance health and well-being in humans. Royal Jelly contains a multitude of vitamins, minerals and amino acids including vitamins B, C and E, and minerals including magnesium, phosphorus, silicon and iron to name but a few.
The Royal Jelly Company prides itself in producing Royal Jelly Elixir containing Fresh Royal Jelly (preserving the active ingredients). There is 120mg of fresh Royal Jelly in every 10ml of the Royal Jelly Elixir, making this a potent formula. Our product is made in England.
Proprietor Anne has always had an interest in health, beauty and nutrition since my early 20s. Her mother introduced me to supplements even though I was brought up on fresh food, fruit and vegetables and she used garlic, royal jelly and other supplements. For 25 years she has always used supplements to support her body and has completed a number of courses and qualifications in nutrition, beauty and health.
After talking to a friend one day about supplements, she commented to Anne that she had so much knowledge and how she always learnt so much from her. She asked the question, 'why don't you produce your own supplements?'. That is how The Royal Jelly Company was born.
The Plight of the Bees
Since this journey began, Anne has become more mindful of the plight of the bees, which we have all taken for granted for many years not only spreading honey on our toast but by continuously destroying our environment. How many of us have actually thought about where the honey comes from, or how the destruction of our environment is affecting the bees? Anne educated herself on the plight of the bees and actively imparts her knowledge to anyone and everyone who wants to take an interest in our goal of allowing the bees to thrive once more.
Our Products
The Royal Jelly Company uses trusted sources for our ingredients, ensuring that they are all fresh, of the best quality, and most importantly sustainable. Our products are manufactured in England. Royal Jelly has been used for thousands of years by humans for its unique health benefits and is still used today to support the body, mind and spirit. By the same token we now have to support the bees which give us so much.
