The Lesser Major and Minor Chakras – The Hidden Gems of Energy Medicine - How to Use them with Acupressure and Reflexology
by John Cross FCSP Dr Ac
Published by John Cross Publications. 2021. E-Book. £7.95.
I am very proud to have written about the Chakra Energy System in many publications and have always attempted to take out the mystique that has always surrounded this aspect of traditional Ayurvedic medicine and to encourage practitioners to introduce my approach into their practices. The emails I have received over the years has proved to me that my work has not been in vain. My other books on acupuncture, distance healing, homoeopathy and the holistic spine have all been well received. Over the years I have taken criticism from those who think my work is too esoteric and has, obviously, no basis in science. Scientists don’t get the fact that not everything can be scientifically ratified. Others have accused me of writing it ‘as it is’ and not giving enough references. It is, though, difficult to offer bibliography and references when ones work is original and pioneering. There doesn’t seem to be room for ‘original thought’.
My latest offering concludes the set on the chakra energy system that began in 2006 with ‘Healing with the Chakra Energy System’ (North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, USA – 2006) in that it deals with the little known Lesser Major and Minor chakras. My work is all self-researched and based on interpretations of traditional writings. Due to my background as a chartered physiotherapist, I have always been of the persuasion that the touch therapies of acupressure and reflexology are just as effective as acupuncture. This system can use acupuncture but with six of the eight Lesser Major chakras located on the skull, it much easier to use the fingers and hands. Each of these energy centres is linked with a specific aspect of the central nervous system, as well as having many other correspondences and associations. I place emphasis on the body’s aura and its various subtle layers and compare each of the Major, Lesser Major and Minor Chakras – as well as the important Command Points used in acupuncture and how some are more ‘powerful’ than others by its influence in reaching different layers of the aura. The material in this book is new and not found anywhere else.

The book is available as a pdf through my web site or via Amazon as Kindle – both at £7.95. I hope to produce a paperback edition later in the year. To purchase please visit John Cross Publications.com and Download Page.
Mechanism of Plasticiser-Induced Neuronal Damage; Potential Protective Benefits of Mushroom Species
A study recently published by Professor Calabrese’s team has shed light on the mechanisms underlying the ability of mushroom species Hericium erinaceus to protect against the damaging cellular effects of the commonly-used plasticiser di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) (Int J Mol Sci 2020; 21: 2138. https://doi.org/10.3390/ijms21062138).[1] H. erinaceus has previously been shown to have a protective effect against ischemia-injury-induced neuronal cell death in rats,[2] so the authors sought to investigate whether, and how, the mushroom might afford similar protection from the neurotoxic effects of DHEP, which is widely used in PVC-containing plastics used for food packaging, clothing toys and medical devices (e.g. blood storage bags).
In this comprehensive in vitro study, pretreatment of pheochromocytoma 12 (PC12) cells – a classical neuronal cell model – with H. erinaceus (MRL*) significantly reduced DEHP-induced cell death and reduced the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within cells. The ROS overproduction by DHEP-exposed cells reduced activity of mitochondrial respiratory complexes and interrupted mitochondrial membrane potential; pre-treatment with H. erinaceus attenuated these effects. Nrf2 is a transcription factor that regulates expression of genes encoding antioxidants. Under basal conditions, it is present in the cytosol in an inactive form. Increased ROS in DHEP-exposed cells was coincincident with increased amounts of active Nrf2 within nuclei and increased levels of HO-1 (haem oxygenase-1 – a protective enzyme produced in response to oxidative stress) within the cells. This increase in Nrf2 was not seen in the H. erinaceus-pre-treated cells. This finding supports the proposition that ROS levels control Nrf2 activity and that Nrf2 controls the upregulation of HO-1 (see Figure 1).
This study provides an indication of molecular mechanisms occurring in DEHP-exposed PC12 cells, and identifies a novel activity of H. erinaceum in counteracting mitochondrial energy deficit, ROS generation and apoptosis. As neurodegenerative disorders are associated with mitochondrial dysfunction – indicated by alteration of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex activities, reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential and ROS increase – the findings of this study suggest that H. erinaceum may prove useful in prevention of oxidant induced-neurodegenerative diseases relevant to mitochondrial medicine and anti-ageing strategies.

The Perils of Underinsurance
by Claire Squire, Balens, Specialist Insurance Brokers
We’ve all heard the stories, insurers who won’t pay out when you’ve had a claim, but have you ever considered that for buildings and contents claims it could be that it was the individual themselves who was responsible? Or that you could be equally at risk?
In buildings and content claims the insurer will proportionately reduce the level of settlement if you don’t have sufficient cover in place. For those who operate under the mistaken belief that “OK, my goods are worth £20,000, but I’m unlikely to have a claim for any more than £10,000, I’ll just insure for that value as the premiums are a lot less”, they could find any payments significantly reduced due to underinsurance in the event of a claim.
Underinsurance is defined as “Inadequate insurance coverage by the holder of a policy.” Whilst insuring your contents and/or buildings, you will need to tell the insurer the total value of the items you want to be insured, this is called the “sum insured”. This information is used to assess the risk that the insurers are taking on and therefore the level of premium you will need to pay. If you give a false account of the sum insured, you put yourself in danger of underinsurance in the event of a claim. Where your policy wording highlights an "average clause" in relation to claims and the sum insured is insufficient, only a proportion of your claim could be paid.
The following example will hopefully give clarity: An individual insures their contents for the sum of £30,000, but find in a claim situation that they need to claim for £35,000. If the insurance loss adjuster assesses the value of the contents at the time when the incident occurred to have been £50,000 (and not £30,000) the value of the settlement would be reduced to only £20,900 when including a £100 excess. This is £14,100 less than the value of their losses!
The calculation is as follows:
£35,000 (Claim) x £30,000 (sum Insured) ÷ £50,000 (Value at Risk - the actual value of the Contents at the time of the claim) = £21,000 - £100 (policy excess) = £20,900 (proposed settlement)
It can be difficult to estimate the value of your contents or the cost of rebuilding a property, which is why a majority of insurers will offer package policies allowing you some room for maneuver. However, it is wise to be as accurate as possible and to ensure that the sums insured are updated should your contents costs increase, for example if you purchase new equipment, as it will be your responsibility to declare and regularly review your sums insured.
Hopefully this brief article has made you aware of the cause and effects of underinsurance. Please check with your insurance broker should you have any questions, they are there to help.

LUMEN DE LUMINE
by Thomas Vaughan, Edited by AE Waite.
Published by Imagier Publishing, Bristol. Hardback. £25.00. 2021. ISBN 978 1910 216 224. (New Book)
A rare and exciting book that deals with Alchemical Symbolism in an easy to understand manner. Written in the 1651, by the Welsh Alchemist, Thomas Vaughan (Eugenius Philalethes), it was designed for students of mystical philosophy and remains an important and rare text concerning the alchemical approach to the mystical life. Lumen de Lumine was first published in 1909 by Longmans Green & Co, edited with an introduction by Arthur Edward Waite.
Waite states in the introduction “The tract is offered by its title as a new magical light communicated to the world: let us see therefore what he has to say about Magic. Well, those who understood it of old divided it into three parts – elemental or physical, celestial or astrological, and spiritual . . . According to Vaughan, the three divisions which I have cited are intermarried, and it is indispensable that they should so be for the accomplishment of any great work. This, however, is when they are comprehended at their height, for normally they are now dismembered. Once they were united in a single natural subject; but man separated them, with the result that they became dead and ineffectual . . .”
Allan Armstrong of Imagier Publishing presents here a new hardbound edition of Lumen de Lumine, bound in blue book-cloth with gilt decoration to the front cover, and supplied with a dust-jacket. (203mm x 127mm tall consisting of 129 pages + 2 b/w illustrations). Price: £25.00 P&P free in the UK. Although not issued as a limited edition, Allan has restricted this edition to 100 copies only.

People often use the word migraine to refer to headaches of many different types. So-called classical migraine attacks have several features:
- Headaches that occur in bouts of between roughly 4 to 72 hours;
- Headaches usually affect one side of the head at a time, although both sides may be affected in separate attacks;
- Headaches are usually throbbing and worsened by normal physical activity nausea and/or vomiting;
- Preceding symptoms, called the 'aura' that most often are visual, such as zigzag lines or flashing lights across or at the edges of the fields of vision
- Other symptoms can include sensitivity to light and sound, or non-visual aura such as a sensation of tingling in the body.
What is a Migraine?
A migraine is a throbbing, intense headache in one half of the head. It can affect people of all ages. The cause of migraine is not known. During an attack, the blood vessels in the brain dilate and then draw together with stimulation of nerve endings near the affected blood vessels. These changes to the blood vessels are probably what cause the pain, but migraine headaches is a condition that is poorly understood.
Sports Applications
Migra-Cap can help to relieve pain and swelling caused by nearly all types of sports injuries. The Migra-Cap® can aid with the treatment and relief of pain, blows to the head and concussions. Turmeric’s Weight Loss Secret Unlocked
Over the last few years turmeric has become a popular supplement, with a host of potential health benefits. Among these benefits, could be an ability to help with weight loss and researchers now appear to have unlocked how turmeric could achieve this…
Scientists[1] fed mice a high fat diet and treated some of them with curcumin, the natural chemical found in turmeric thought to be behind its benefits. Those mice given curcumin were seen to gain less weight, than those that weren’t, and were seen to have increased thermogenesis, a process of heat production in organisms, which burns energy.
The scientists were able to deduce that this increase in thermogenesis occurred because of a restructuring of the gut microbiota (gut flora, including bacteria and fungi).
Whilst human studies need to be carried out, it appears that turmeric may be able to alter gut flora in a way that enhances thermogenesis, the ability to create heat, which burns energy and thus reduces weight gain.
Which Turmeric Supplement
To ensure you get the most from turmeric, health food specialists Natur Boutique have created a special mix which combines whole turmeric powder with a concentrated extract, containing 95% curcuminoids, and black pepper, which is thought could help increase the bio-availability of curcumin. The result is a powerful and effective supplement, free from additives and fillers.
