Neuroskeletal Re-alignment Therapy (BSRT) Case Studies Revolutionizing the Treatment of Back Pain
listed in back pain, originally published in issue 133 - March 2007
Some of my graduates from Morley College, Westminster Bridge Road, London, to provide some case studies from their experiences of using NSRT on general back pain. NSRT is a non-manipulative technique, which is so light and relaxing that it cannot damage tissues but can powerfully affect re-alignment of bone and soft tissue. A list of practitioners can be found on www.neuroskeletal.co.uk
Case Study: Sciatica
Patient was a young mother in her twenties, presenting with severe lower back pain and sciatica where referred pain was radiating down her right lateral thigh. A part-time working mother with an infant child, she always had a very busy schedule. Diagnosed with sciatica two months prior to coming for NSRT, and the previous night had even gone into hospital due to very severe sciatic pain where she had been given strong analgesics and sent home. Nevertheless the pain was still unbearable and she felt drowsy from the strong medication. The next day after receiving the first NSRT treatment she felt much better and the referred pain down the leg had gone, although she still felt a little lower back pain. I advised her to avoid certain unhealthy movements and, after three more treatments, she felt that she did not need any more sessions, as her sciatic and lower back pain had gone.Marina Paparakou MBNSRTA
Case Study: Lower Back Pain/ Osteoarthritis
A 58-year-old woman presented with acute pain emanating from the left sacro-iliac area into the sacrum, with spasms to 5th lumbar area, using a walking aid.During menopause the patient started having hip problems and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in the left hip, lower back and later in the neck. After four years, a hip prosthesis was inserted. Post surgery, no pain was felt until the 3rd month when the lower back pain returned. Alexander Technique and Osteopathy were used to help but the pain persisted. It had become consistently worse over the last two months.
Postural analysis identified possible pelvic tilt, significant lordosis in lower back and twist in upper body. Hips appeared out of alignment and following palpation, the right side of the lower lumbar area was substantially raised.
Treatment 1: Called a few hours after the first treatment to report dissipation of pain and felt more ‘upright”.
Treatment 2: Reported spasms and acute pain in the back had disappeared but now pain felt more on left hip, a general tightness across the sacrum and a vague ache in the lower back. Sitting and driving were uncomfortable; however moving about was easier.
Treatment 3: Experienced no discomfort since previous treatment and now able to run after teenage son! Reported tightness in right shoulder, so remedial massage in between NSRT sessions was suggested.
Treatment 4: Reported to be pain free since the last treatment, with the exception of the right shoulder which still felt tight.
Treatment 5: No pain or discomfort anywhere.
Treatment 6: No further re-occurrence of any pain but wishes to continue with treatments for both its physical and psychological benefits.
Conclusion: Patient was extremely happy with NSRT. The first treatment gave instant relief from muscle spasms and further treatments appeared to help with the neck and shoulder problems. By the sixth treatment it was difficult to remember whether there had been any discomfort. Treatments continued on a bi-weekly basis as it is very deep, relaxing and meditative. It is now over a year since I have treated this patient and no physical discomfort exists to date with no problems when walking.

Case Study: Severe Pain in Right Hip and Leg, Swollen Foot and Associated Migraine
Patient had an accident 20 years ago with lower back pain since, then suffered a fall 21/2 years ago. Presented with injury to sacro-iliac region with constant referred burning pain down into right lateral thigh into the lateral knee, accompanied by oedema and tenderness in the right foot. Pain ranged from lower back on the right side, radiating around to the right hip. Hip and leg mobility limited due to pain and walking restricted to short distances. Continuing symptoms and the physical difficulties with mobility made normal daily life difficult.NSRT Involvement
Prior to consultation, the patient had relevant X-rays which revealed nothing significant, and was awaiting an MRI scan. Physiotherapy treatments had been offered, but had not improved the pain. After the first NSRT session, the patient reported that although the pain was worse immediately after, as is often the case, and for the following two days, then the swelling subsided and the pain had improved markedly. On the second and third sessions, the result followed a similar pattern. On the fourth session, the patient reported localization of the pain to the lateral right quadriceps, down to the right calf and was slightly painful to the touch. The results of the MRI scan (and accompanying medical report) showed nothing significant, and the pain and range of movement was now much improved from our previous sessions, so I was now able to perform remedial massage with confidence where the right gluteus, quadriceps and IT band were very tight.
Results: Almost all pain was eliminated, range of movement increased and migraines ceased with the reduction of associated stress.
