Alexander Technique Treatments and Training – Stephen Cooper

Oxford Alexander Training School, director Stephen Cooper, has been training Alexander Teachers for over 20 years. The course lasts three years, with students coming into class every morning during term times. The Technique helps us to understand how we use ourselves and how to change.

Alexander Technique Treatments and Training

Let’s look at this is a practical way. As you sit reading this, your habitual ways of holding your back and your shoulders, balancing your weight, and perhaps moving your head towards the screen, all affect the way that you are performing this act of reading. If you go to stand up all your assumptions about what you need to do - that your back needs to change shape, that the muscles of your neck need to contract, and so on - will be governed by habit and will usually be engaged without much thought.

This would fine if we all used ourselves well, but a moment’s observation will allow you to see some of the strains and tensions that you unnecessarily impose on yourself. Does your neck remain free or does it become tense? Does your head remain poised or does it move sharply backwards? Does your back work without strain, or is there a lot of unnecessary muscular work and skeletal distortion? Our lack of awareness about the way that we use ourselves is really irresponsible, and furthermore it’s not hard to see that all those strains and tensions are not doing us any good – in fact may even be harmful, the cause of back pain for instance and a cause of poor posture.

So it would seem worthwhile to make a study of how we use ourselves, and to try to use ourselves better. This is not easy – we do many habitual things without even noticing that we are doing them, and how are we going to learn to notice?

The Alexander Technique is a way of working on ourselves, learning to stop before old habit has asserted itself and then redirecting the way that we intend to move. This may sound abstract but it immediately becomes practical the moment you start working with a teacher. The teacher will guide you through movement, helping you to see how and where your old habits assert themselves and helping you to organise yourself in a better way. As you work you will find that movement seems easier, and perhaps old pains, old postures and old habits seem no longer necessary any more.

As you work with the Technique and come to value its significance, you might consider training as a teacher, joining the growing number of teachers worldwide who are helping others through the Technique.

Super Health with Homeovitality

Homeovitality is an entirely new concept in health promotion which takes advantage of new 'cutting-edge' scientific discoveries to help everyone stay as healthy as possible and enjoy different forms of nature’s super-health, better. Natural super-health is the highest possible level of health and disease resistance that can be achieved naturally. Homeovitality has been developed as a safe and natural way to help everyone to enjoy natural super-health and stay healthy.

Super Health with Homeovitality

The genetic blueprint contains many genes that promote health as well as many genes that cause disease. With a view to increasing the specificity and safety of gene targeting by homeopathic DNA,  researchers Drs Jenaer and Marichal pioneered the use of highly diluted small DNA molecules with well-defined sequences to target immune response genes and fight infec-tions. Their system, called Micro-Immunotherapy proved to be very effective. The Homeovitality system was developed along the same lines as Micro-Immunotherapy.

The Homeovitality system uses highly diluted DNA molecules with precise sequences to target genes that produce the body’s natural proteins that have been proven to promote health as well as protect against and resolve many diseases. The Homeovitality system has been developed to avoid the prospect of inducing disease symptoms in recipients because it uses DNA molecules with standardised sequences that target only genes that have been proven to support health and resolve disease.

Natural Healing Paradigm - Stephen Macallan Practitioner

The latest research in genetics shows us that, in terms of health issues and diseases, it is not so much a matter of genes causing the illnesses, as we all have all the same genes; it is more a matter of which genes get altered and which genes get activated, what alters them and what activates them? The answers to those questions are now known - genes become activated, or altered, or altered and activated, by the environment of the gene. The environment of the gene is influenced and can only be influenced by two factors - energy and/or matter.

Stephen Macallan logo

Energy comes in waveforms ranging from the micro to the macro, incorporating microwaves from mobile phones, microwave cookers, mobile phone masts, x-ray radiation from Fukushima and Chernobyl, sound waves from music, light waves from the sun and the stars and the radiation from your brain waves. Matter includes nutrients from food and drink and non-nutrients such as mercury from amalgam fillings, food colourings and additives, pharmaceutical and recreational drugs, personal care products that go on your skin (which is not waterproof), fumes and gases that you breathe in - all the substances that surround us.

This takes us neatly back to the old classical Natural Healing paradigm that your health is totally governed by:

  • Intake - everything that enters the body through any route;
  • Output - everything that leaves the body through any route, though the important part is what doesn’t leave the body and should;
  • Movement - of the body and within the body, as in exercise, blood circulation and so on.

After the human genome was mapped it seemed that the genes had to be added to that list, giving us something that was outside our control, but the new science of Epigenetics puts even the genes back in our control because of the way that genes become activated as I outlined above. However because epigenetics shows us that energy has a an impact on our genes we do now have to add a fourth item to the classic list:

Thoughts - Our thoughts are or create an energy, and instruments can measure it;  this means that the cells of our bodies are bathed in the radiation from our thoughts 24/7. Also, our knowledge of body chemistry shows us that our thoughts create neuropeptides which travel around the bloodstream and attaching to immune system receptors wherever they may be!

The paradigm now is that your health is absolutely dictated by:

  • Intake
  • Output
  • Movement
  • Thoughts

So, if your health is less than ideal then examine carefully what your body is taking in, and take in all the good stuff your body wants and less of the stuff your body does not want. Ensure that you are outputting everything that needs to be output. Move your body regularly and ensure that the flows within the body are as they should be. Think the right thoughts (good ones) and don’t think the bad thoughts. It may be appropriate to seek professional help with any or all of these factors.

HongXing TCM clinic

The HongXing TCM clinic is one of the few clinics specializing in providing alternative treatments for certain chronic diseases; it is an old family clinic, providing traditional Chinese herbal medicines for various illnesses. Since the 1980s, the clinic began focusing on developing and providing formulated-remedies for certain none-curable chronic diseases, particularly those that are associated with the autoimmune system. The majority of patients who have come to the clinic and seek our treatments have all previously failed to respond to conventional drugs or other forms of traditional medicines. They have suffered for many years with their illness, often leading to multiple additional health problems.

HongXing TCM clinic

The HongXing TCM clinic is a typical old style traditional TCM family clinic, in China - passing down family formulas, skills and experiences from one generation to the next, specialising in treating patients with various chronic conditions with formulated TCM remedies.

The HongXing Clinic is different from other TCM practices in one aspect, most TCM practitioners usually treat their patients with different herbs in a pack to make tea, as at HongXing clinic, they have the special skills to make their own formulated remedies in the form of pills (the size of soya bean). This has the advantage of simplicity over the preparation of a 'tea' which, can be a complicated process. The consumption of a pill is less confusing for people who are not used to traditional Chinese medicine, particularly children. At HongXing Clinic they can adjust formulate pills according to patients’ condition, the age, the weight etc. Changes in the formulation of the pills can be made at different stages of the treatment as the patient’s condition changes.

TCM has been practised along with the conventional medicine in china since 1960s. The HongXing clinic has also integrated the conventional medicine method into its traditional way by using laboratory tests and urinalysis as the means to monitor the patients’ progress along with traditional approach, such as observation, auscultation, olfaction and interrogation.

The HongXing clinic prides itself on developing and perfecting the old traditional remedies, find cures for certain, generally accepted, non- curable chronic disease.

CNM - College of Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathy is a healthcare philosophy based on the healing power of nature; that the body has an innate intelligence and ability to heal itself if given the right conditions. With more and more of the ‘wrong’ conditions becoming prevalent in our 21st century lifestyle - or perhaps because of it - there seems to be a corresponding interest in reconnecting with the power of nature and in learning how to take back responsibility for our own health.

CNN

Naturopathic principles underlie all of the courses offered by CNM. CNM's diploma courses in Naturopathic Nutrition, Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture and Homeopathy combine traditional wisdom with evidence based teachings and the most up to date research.

CNM was set up in 1998 to train students to become successful natural therapy practitioners, based on the Naturopathic system, and CNM has a fantastically positive story to tell.  Today CNM have 10 colleges across the UK and Ireland, at which we train hundreds of students every year. 80% of CNM students go on to practise and the more there are of them, supporting members of the public in their quest for health and wellbeing, the wider the message is spread about the effectiveness of natural therapies. CNM graduates are effecting a sea-change which is impacting society and waking people up to the degree of control that it is possible to have over their own health.  This year CNM has a record number of applications for places at the college and will also soon be opening a sister college in the United States.

Accountants, salespeople, hairdressers, drivers, fitness instructors, doctors or pharmacists looking for a different health paradigm, and stay-at-home mothers looking for a flexible career once their children are older, CNM students come from all walks of life and are people who want to do something meaningful.  Practising as a natural health therapist in their chosen specialism once qualified, offers a flexible and satisfying career that gives them the ability to help themselves and others to better health.  There are flexible study options to help students fit study in around other commitments, and all courses require classroom attendance.  CNM courses are very ‘hands-on’ and involve lots of clinical practice to ensure that graduates feel confident when practising.

A range of short courses and postgraduate courses in other therapies, designed either for interest or to improve skills, are available at some CNM colleges. Regular free-to-attend Open Evenings held at all CNM colleges are an opportunity to find out more about the courses available.

botanica2014

Essential Oil Resource Consultants’ (EORC) activities and resources include teaching face to face classes in Provence and internationally, providing consultancy services, lecturing at conferences and congresses as well as publishing a unique peer reviewed publication, the International Journal of Clinical Aromatherapy (IJCA).

A culmination of several years of work and careful planning, Essential Oil Resource Consultants together with the IJCA, hosted the highly successful inaugural botanica2012 conference at Trinity College Dublin last September. This event welcomed 21 international expert speakers and 250 participants from over 33 countries for three days of conference on plant therapeutics and clinical aromatherapy. Due to its remarkable success, plans for botanica2014 are already underway, to be held at Trinity College Dublin 5-7th September 2014. Details of the conference programme will be announced in September.

The International Journal of Clinical Aromatherapy was started in 2004 as the only peer reviewed and evidence-based biannual publication in the English language that promotes the use of essential oils in clinical settings. The IJCA remains a unique resource that enables practitioners to extend their knowledge and skills and promote greater integration of aromatherapy in their respective clinical settings. The journal’s transition from print version to e-journal is currently in progress and back issues are available for purchase. In 2012 the journal had integration as a theme, with publication of a special botanica2012 conference edition. The theme for 2013 is diversity - demonstrating the uses of essential oils across a wide range of clinical settings worldwide including psychiatry, cosmetology and dentistry.

Hypnotherapy - Method for All with HTI

Hypnotherapy has proven an effective method across both time and cultures.  Trance is a universal phenomenon among humans, and has major benefits as a means of mental and emotional rest and recreation.  Throughout the world in human societies we find practices which induce trance.  This may be through stillness such as contemplation and quiet prayer, or through rhythmic activities such as drumming, chanting or dancing.  The need to expand our awareness beyond the present and the everyday is common to us all.

J Butler teaching class
J Butler teaching class

Dr John Butler has had direct experience of the resilience of hypnotherapy across cultures, as by request from enthusiasts for hypnotherapy in other countries, he now teaches there and finds that students can apply directly the hypnotherapy methods they learn from him.

In therapeutic hypnosis, trance is used to access mental and emotional resources which we can then apply to overcome painful and limiting problems.  Sometimes the process is focused on a shift or development of insight, so that our perspective changes and we overcome panic, for example, by taking a wider and/or longer view of ourselves including rewriting negative scripts from the past.  Sometimes it is focused on acquiring and gaining facility in skills which enable us to develop and recreate our lives.   In hypnotherapy, this process can be greatly accelerated by trance, in which our ability to try out different futures in imagination is more liberated from everyday constraints.

The commonality between all peoples is much more strongly evident at the deep levels of our consciousness than at the surface level of our social fashions and customs.  Hypnotherapy works directly at these deep levels, using trance and the core faculties of imagination and emotion.  In addition, trance has the invaluable feature that it can be achieved through a partnership, with one person – the hypnotist – guiding the client.  This is very helpful for burdened and/or distressed individuals who may find it hard to move out of their usual state of mind by their own efforts.

Adaptations are, naturally, made by a skilled hypnotherapist to the presenting style and coping resources of the client.  A different approach is taken for an overwhelmed, distressed client, for instance, than for a client seeking help for a problem which affects only a small or limited area of their functioning.  However, the core hypnotherapy methods of trance, and communications adapted to the principles of human imaginative and emotional functioning, are effective with remarkable consistency from generation to generation, and from culture to culture.

To reflect this expansion of activities and the universal nature of hypnotherapy, his teaching faculty, formerly the Hypnotherapy Training Institute of Britain, has now been re-named Hypnotherapy Training International - looking forward to hypnotherapy worldwide.

Kay’s own desire to develop personally, professionally and spiritually led her along many paths to meet countless inspiring (and not so inspiring) people and to learn a wide variety of systems, methods/modalities, all of which help heal and empower.

Helping others learn/develop has always been her passion.  All of her roles have involved motivating, educating and empowering others, so much so that she chose an MA in learning and development as her Masters Degree.  Her interest in holism influenced both her business and teaching roles in further and higher education and also underpins her current teaching / training / mentoring, accredited counselling and positive life change coaching roles.

What’s the Best Way to Achieve Empowerment, Development, Advancement?

A comment Kay often come across is:

“I’m keen to achieve personal empowerment, to develop professionally, to advance spiritually . . . but how do I choose?  There is a bewildering array of methods available and an even greater number of people advertising their offerings”

So, how do you choose?

  1. Never rush your choice; take time and thoroughly check out:
    •  Whichever offering has appealed to you (to ensure that particular system/method is right for you at this time).  An internet search may help;
    •  The therapist / teacher / coach / counsellor’s expertise (qualifications, experience, membership of professional associations, satisfied students/clients . . .);
    •  Are there testimonials you can read?  Former clients/students you could contact?  What does a Google search on their name reveal?
  2. Contact them (including by phone) before committing so that you can ask questions and get a ‘feel’ for whether you’ll be comfortable with their energies - after all you could be investing a lot of time and money in them;
  3. Having done your research, trust your instinct because there are no wrong decisions, only learning opportunities!

The Gokhale Method Postural Phenomenon Arrives in the UK

Esther Gokhale is a name to remember - currently heralded an officer workers’ hero in the States, Gokhale is on the cusp of breaking into the UK and Europe. Her book, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back, recently hit the top of Amazon chart sales, she’s been featured in a number of the most renowned American papers, including the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Chicago Tribune, and she personally works with some of America’s top business leaders from Google and Oracle.

lotus publishing

After crippling back pain during her first pregnancy and unsuccessful back surgery, Esther became intensely focused on finding the key to a pain-free body.  Her studies at the Aplomb Institute in Paris and years of research in Burkina Faso, India and Portugal led to her development of the Gokhale Method.  Gokhale (pronounced go-clay) continues to dedicate her life to posture education, helping people reclaim a pain-free life through implementing critical structural changes.

Gokhale believes the root of most back pain, musculoskeletal pain, and general feelings of discomfort are due to the fact we have lost sight of how to use our bodies. Office workers and others with sedentary jobs will be pleased to hear that the main cause of such maladies is not the usual, hard-to-address list of factors, but rather that it’s the way we hold and position our bodies that is creating the problem.

While many of us slump our spines into a C-Shaped position, some of us go the other way and arch up into a tense S shape. Gokhale encourages her students and followers to return their bodies to a more natural stance that is upright and relaxed in a tall J shape. By emphasizing everyday movement rather than periodic exercise sessions, the Gokhale Method gives users ample opportunity to practise without taking time out of their day. The focus ranges across numerous everyday activities including sleeping, walking, standing or sitting. In relearning these everyday actions, users will reposition and reshape their shoulders, arms, neck, torso, hips, legs and feet the way they were designed to be.

The Gokhale Method teaches followers how posture is linked to any number of seemingly unrelated ailments. By lengthening and decompressing the spine, followers of the method will remove some of the stresses that cause disc degeneration and spinal arthritic changes. By toning the deeper abdominal muscles and relaxing the back muscles they will experience deeper, healthier respiration. By improving their pelvic architecture, they will improve or address conditions like chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and urinary incontinence.

    Alzheimer’s Research Progress

    Protein modification may help to control Alzheimer’s and epilepsy according to research by Tel Aviv University researchers. In the brain, cell-to-cell communication is dependent on neurotransmitters, chemical that aid the transfer of information between neurons. Several proteins have the ability to modify the production of these chemicals by either increasing or decreasing their amount, or promoting or preventing their secretion. One example in tomosyn, which hinders the secretion of neurotransmitters in abnormal amounts.

    Nutritionists have been singing the praises of Omega-3 and its importance in our diets for years, but a recent study has dramatically shown the full impact of having more Omega-3 in your diet. The study looked at over 2,500 adults and was carried out in America. The US scientists were able to link omega-3 levels directly to adult deaths. They found that the older adults with higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids had a 25% less chance of dying prematurely. Belle* syrups come with either omega-3, iron or vitamin D and give you a healthy hit of rosehip with your daily dose.

    Bowl Cancer Survival Boost with New Study

    A new study led by an expert from London’s Kingston University, Professor Helmout Modjtahedi examines why some tumours are hard to treat and how they can be targeted with the most effective therapies. During the studies, specimens from patients with tumours of the colon or rectum will be examined for biomarkers to help pinpoint which individuals are most likely to benefit from specific therapies, particularly two new antibody-based drugs. Since the drugs cost tens of thousands of pounds a year, targeting their use would help health authorities reduce costs, while patients who would not benefit from them could be spared the trauma of unnecessary treatment and offered an alternative instead. The preliminary findings of Professor Modjtahedi’s research has been published in the British Journal of Cancer.

    Breast Cancer Advance

    Scientists at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have made an advance in breast cancer research which shows how certain enzymes released by cancerous cells could have a protective function. New research in the Journal of Biological Chemistry reveals that an enzyme called MMP-8 (matrix metalloproteinase-8) could be acting as a locator to the immune system, which then becomes activated to attack tumours.

    Phosphatidylserine Research in Degenerative Brain Disorders

    Phosphatidylserine is a natural food supplement produced from beef, oysters and soy. Proven to improve cognition and slow memory loss, it is a popular treatment for older people experiencing memory impairment. Now a team headed by Professor Gill Ast and Dr Ron Bochner of Tel Aviv University Department of Human Molecular Genetics has discovered that the same supplement improves the functioning of genes involved in degenerative brain disorders including Parkinson’s disease and Familial Dysautonomia (FD). Already approved for use as a supplement by the FDA, phosphatidylserine contains a molecule essential for transmitting signals between nerve cells in the brain. Professor Ast and his fellow researchers decided to test whether the same chemical, which is naturally synthesized in the body and known to boost memory capability, could impact the genetic mutation which leads to FD.

    EU Health Claims Laws Threaten Dark Age for Consumer Information

    A peer-reviewed article published recently concludes that the European Union (EU) health claims legislation jeopardizes consumer informed choice by poorly reflecting the current status of Nutritional Science. It urges food business operators to collaborate in order to influence the Nutrition and Health Claims Refutation (NHCR: No. 1924/2006) in a more realistic and flexible direction. The article’s author, Robert Verkerk PhD, executive and scientific director of campaign organization the Alliance for Natural Health International, says the paper offers a stark warning of the potential implications of the NHCR if the authorization process for health claims on foods and natural health products remains unchanged. The article highlights some of the key areas where the Regulation fails to meet is originally intended objectives and suggests various work-arounds that could allow commercial operators to communicate outside the Regulations very narrow remit. In the longer term however, ANH-Intl is committed to pushing for major reform.

    World Hypertension Day

    World Hypertension Day is on 17 May 2013. Hair loss may be one of the key indicators of heart problems including hypertension according to meta-analysis by researchers in Japan. A study of nearly 37,000 people published in the online journal BMJ Open said balding men were 32% more likely to have coronary heart disease and be at risk of hypertension. The study adds to an increasing body of evidence already carried out by leading hair nutrition supplement Nourkrin®, which shows that hair loss is not only an indicator of heart hypertension, stroke, diabetes, thyroid problems and stress. Nourkin®  research has revealed that female hair loss could be a very valuable early warning system for doctors in the battle to catch serious disease right at the start and improve prognosis. This is especially relevant for the diagnosis of hypertension, for which there are no visible signs.

    Hay Diet for Healthy Weight Loss

    A 90-year-old diet technique is at the forefront of health and weight management news thanks to its impressive results and easy methods. The Hay Diet is based on the principle of segregating certain food types to maintain a healthy weight. First created in the 1920s by Physician William Howard Hay, the Hay Diet has stood the test of time and has garnered much praise by nutrition experts for its far-reaching health benefits as well as its ability to help manage body weight. Unlike faddy crash diets or cleanses, the Hay Diet promotes the idea that it’s not so much what you eat, but what you choose to eat with it. The key to the diet is understanding that some food groups shouldn’t be consumed with others. One such mix is carbohydrates and proteins. Whilst following the Hay Diet, no one meal should contain both protein and carbohydrates in one sitting.

    Half the Amount of Recommended Exercise Can Cut Risk of Serious Illness

    Doing just half the amount of recommended exercise can be enough to reduce the risk of serious illness, research at the University of Bath has found. Professor Conrad Earnest and colleagues in the University’s Department for Health, studied patients with Metabolic Syndrome, a combination of medical disorders that together increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The study was designed and carried out in the United States to examine the minimal threshold for exercise benefits based on public physical activity guidelines. The results of the study are published in the paper Dose Effect of Cardiovascular Exercise on Metabolic Syndrome in Postmenopausal Women in The American Journal of Cardiology.
