Abstract
ALLAIS and colleagues, Women's Headache Center, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Via Ventimiglia 3, I-10126 Turin, Italy, have studied non-pharmacological approaches to chronic headaches.
Background
Background: The aim of this open randomized trial was to evaluate transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS), infrared laser therapy, and acupuncture in the treatment of transformed migraine.
Methodology
Methods: 60 women suffering from transformed migraine were assigned, after a 1-month run-in period, to 3 different treatments: TENS, infrared laser therapy, or acupuncture. All patients underwent 10 sessions of the therapy and monthly control visits. TENS was applied for two weeks on 5 days each week with 3 TENS units simultaneously at 80 Hz, 120 Hz and 4 Hz. The infrared laser was applied every other day on tender scalp spots for three weeks. Acupuncture was carried out twice a week in the first 2 weeks and then weekly. The points LR3, SP6, LI4, GB20, GV20 were always treated as well as additional points according to patients' symptoms.
Results
Results: The number of days with headache significantly decreased during treatment in all groups. Acupuncture showed the best effectiveness in relieving headaches over time.
Conclusion
Conclusions: All three treatments examined in this trial proved to be effective in reducing frequency of headaches, with acupuncture appearing the best.
