Abstract
ARAKAWA, Fukushima Medical College, Japan studied the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) to reduce nausea, vomiting and anxiety associated with chemotherapy.
Background
Methodology
60 chemotherapy hospitalised patients in a cancer centre were randomly assigned to either an experimental or control group. Those patients in the experimental group received PMR training in addition to regular nursing care, whereas the control patients received contact with the investigator.
Results
Patients in the PMR group had reduced total scores in nausea, vomiting and retching, and subjective feelings of anxiety . The efficacy of PMR in reducing subscale scores of vomiting was not verified, partly due to an extremely low incidence of vomiting.
Conclusion
PMR appears to be effective in reducing nausea, vomiting and retching associated with chemotherapy.
