Abstract

BALLEGAARD and colleagues, Acupuncture Center, Klampenborg, Denmark. ballegaard@aku-ballegaard.dk. used acupuncture, Shiatsu and lifestyle adjustments in the treatment of patients with severe angina pectoris. @m:METHODS: 69 patients with severe angina pectoris were treatment with acupuncture, Shiatsu and lifestyle changes and followed up for 2 years. 49 of these patients were coronary-artery bypass grafting (CABG) candidates, whereas bypass grafting was rejected in the other 20 patients. Outcome findings were compared with those from a large prospective randomised trial comparing CABG with percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). @r:RESULTS: Compared to the death and heart attack rate of 21% in the CABG patients, and 15% in the PTCA patients, the death and heart attack rate of the patients treated with acupuncture, Shiatsu and lifestyle adjustments was only 7%. There were no significant differences regarding pain relief among the 3 groups. Invasive treatment was postponed in 61% of the study patients due to clinical improvement and there was a reduction of 90% in the annual number of in-hospital days, resulting in an estimated saving of US$12,000 per patient. There were no significant differences between men and women in the study, despite the fact that the men had significantly less positive expectations regarding treatment outcome. @c: The results suggest that the combined treatment with acupuncture, Shiatsu and lifestyle adjustment may be highly cost effective for patients with advanced angina pectoris.

Comment

These results are simply amazing. Not only is a massive amount of money saved in not having to perform surgery or even be in hospital, the death and heart attack rate is 1/3 that of patients undergoing coronary-artery bypass grafts. I would be extremely interested to hear from readers in Denmark if these results were announced in the media I have certainly never seen a news bulletin discussing acupuncture, Shiatsu and lifestyle adjustments for angina patients.
