Abstract
BASTILLE and GILL-BODY, Yoga Alliance, Boudreau Physical Therapy Associates, Keene, NH 03608, USA, jvbastille@msn.com, have developed a yoga-based exercise programme for people with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis.
Background
Many people who have had a stroke complain of impaired health due to reduced levels of activity. Obviously they need gentle forms of exercise of which yoga could be one. This study was a preliminary evaluation of the effects of a yoga-based exercise programme on people with chronic poststroke hemiparesis.
Methodology
4 subjects with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis participated in this single case study. They received individual 1.5 hour yoga sessions twice weekly for 8 weeks. The Berg Balance Scale and the Timed Movement Battery were used as primary outcome measures, with the Stroke Impact Scale as a secondary measure.
Results
3 of the subjects improved in the Timed Movement Battery over the study period, and 2 improved in the Berg Balance Scale.
Conclusion
The results of this pilot warrant further investigation of yoga-based exercise for people with post-stroke disabilities.
