Abstract
BLOCK and MEAD, Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care, Evanston, Illinois 60201, USA, have reviewed (38 references) the historical background of vitamin C in alternative cancer treatment. Abstract: Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is the supplement most commonly taken by cancer patients, although in most cases this happens without the treating physician even knowing about it. This article presents a comprehensive review of the literature on the effect of vitamin C on cancer survival. Findings from 6 uncontrolled studies suggest that vitamin C may increase survival, while 2 controlled studies have yielded null results. These studies and their impact on medical practitioners are discussed, and it is noted that there is still controversy about them in the alternative cancer community.
