Abstract

BOULDIN and colleagues, Department of Pharmacy Administration, The University of Mississippi 38677, USA. phacsb@olemiss.edu conducted a survey to document the market presence of herbal medicine products in community pharmacies throughout the USA.

Background

Methodology

The survey consisted of a 5-page questionnaire sent to a geographically stratified random sample of community pharmacies in the US.

Results

About 73% of pharmacists who responded indicated that their pharmacy carried commercially prepared herbal products. On average, pharmacists did not believe that herbal products are well standardised, nor that the products are well accepted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

Conclusion

There is considerable potential for pharmacists to fill a role as information provider to patients who take herbal medicines; however their perceptions of the product class may have to be changed before this can be achieved.
