Abstract

CAMPOS DE CARVALHO and co-authors, Ribeirao Preto College of Nursing, University of Sao Paulo, and WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Research Development, Sao Paulo, Brazil,  ecdcava@usp.br, have studied progressive muscle relaxation and nausea/vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

Background

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a progressive muscle relaxation intervention on nausea and vomiting associated with anticancer chemotherapy.

Methodology

30 hematology patients who were hospitalized and received chemotherapy treatment at a large hospital in the interior of Sao Paulo participated in this pilot study.

Results

Progressive muscle relaxation led to statistically significant changes in physiological and muscle conditions and in nausea and vomiting levels.

Conclusion

This relaxation technique may be an effective nursing intervention method to allay or alleviate nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy.
