Abstract

CHEN and NICKEL, King Street Medical Arts Centre, 71 King Street, W. Suite 400, Mississauga, Ontario, L5B4A2, Canada, have studied the application of electro-acupuncture in the treatment of chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain. Abstract: Chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome are often found in urological practice and has a significant impact on quality of life. Standard therapies often fail to achieve sustainable improvement of symptoms. This study attempts to show that neuromodulatory treatment in the form of electro-acupuncture can be a minimally invasive and effective treatment for chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain that is intractable by standard therapies. This neuromodulatory therapy lends support to the hypothesis that in some cases chronic prostatitits and chronic pelvic pain may be a neuropathic pain syndrome.
