Abstract
CHO and TSAY, Department of Nursing, National Taiwan Institute of Nursing, report on a randomized trial on the effects of acupressure with massage on fatigue and depression in patients with kidney disease.
Background
Fatigue and depression are the most significant symptoms experiences by patients with end-stage kidney disease. This study aimed at examining the effects of acupressure with massage on these symptoms.
Methodology
62 haemodialysis patients participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to a study group or a control group. Patients in the study group received, in addition to the routine clinical care also given to control patients, acupoint massage for 12 minutes a day, three days a week, for four weeks. Outcome measures included the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, t-test, and analysis of covariance were used for data analysis.
Results
Patients enrolled in the study experienced a moderate level of fatigue, and nearly 65% of them had a depressed mood. Both fatigue and depression amongst patients in the study group showed significantly greater improvement over the study period than amongst patients in the control group.
Conclusion
The results of this study provide a basis for nursing care using acupressure and massage of patients with end stage renal disease.
