Abstract

DAS and KAPLAN, Joint Center for Radiation Therapy, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA 02215, USA, have reviewed (11 references) the roles of the herbal medicine, PC-SPES, of selenium, and of vitamin E in prostate cancer. Abstract: Many prostate cancer patients use complementary and alternative medications. Especially the essential nutrients selenium and vitamin E, as well as the herbal remedy PC-SPES, have generated a good deal of interest lately as potential preventives and therapeutics of prostate cancer. This article reviews the clinical and preclinical evidence for these agents, because it is deemed essential that health professionals are aware of the potential role and side effects that these complementary therapies can have.
