Abstract
DAVIDSON and colleagues, School of Nursing, Family and Community Health (SNFCH), College of Social and Health Sciences (CSHS), University of Western Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia, have reviewed (68 references) Traditional Chinese Medicine and heart disease.
Background
The rapidly growing interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is due to a number of reasons including recognition of its benefits, dissatisfaction with the Western medical model, and an increasing commitment to holistic care and recognition that psychological factors influence disease outcomes. This review, aimed at understanding the increasing trend towards TCM in heart disease, defines and describes TCM, and analyzes its implications for Western health care delivery.
Methodology
The CINAHL, MEDLINE, HealthSTAR, Academic ASAP and Cochrane databases were searched for articles published since 1982 and accessible to English speakers. Internet search engines were also used.
Results
Results and conclusions: Difficulties in accessing information about TCM have implications for health education and patient safety in coronary heart disease. An understanding of TCM and its potential interactions with Western medical treatments is necessary. The development of this knowledge is essential in order to provide safe and effective health care to patients with heart disease who use combination therapies.
