Abstract
DAY, Faculty of Nursing, Universal College of Learning, Manawatu Polytechnic, Palmerston North, New Zealand, reviewed (31 references) research indicating that relaxation can help relieve pain and distress in patients suffering angina.
Background
Patients suffering angina due to heart disease endure the trauma and stress of what they perceive to be a life-threatening situation in addition to the pain involved, although standard nursing care is mainly aimed only at relief of pain. The distress of chest pain may exacerbate the pain itself, so that analgesic medication alone is not enough to comfort patients.
