Abstract
DE PAULA and colleagues, University of Sao Paulo, Ribeirao Preto College of Nursing, WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Research Development, Brazil, have studied the use of progressive muscle relaxation for pain relief in gynaecology and obstetrics.
Background
The study aimed to test the effect of a specific intervention, progressive muscle relaxation, on post-operative pain.
Methodology
61 women who had undergone gynaecological or obstetric surgery were taught progressive muscle relaxation. Outcome measures (pain, quality of life, muscular parameters) were taken before and after the intervention.
Results
Significant differences were found in pain, quality of life and muscular parameters after the application of progressive muscle relaxation.
Conclusion
Progressive muscle relaxation enabled patients to have some control of their pain levels.
