Abstract
DE STEFANI and colleagues, Registro Nacional de Cancer, Instituto Nacional de Oncologia, Montevideo, Uruguay studied the relationship between dietary sucrose intake and colorectal cancer .
Background
Methodology
The authors conducted a case control study during 1992-96. 289 cases and 564 controls were admitted for diagnosis or treatment in 4 major hospitals in Montevideo and considered eligible for the study.
Results
Total sucrose intake was associated with a positive gradient of risks; the odds ratio (OR) for the uppermost quartile of intake was 2.18. Glucose intake was associated with a small and non-significant increase in risk (OR = 1.46). An interaction between sucrose and protein intake was discovered; the OR for high intakes of sucrose and protein was 6.07.
