Abstract
GORINSTEIN and Colleagues, School of Pharmacy, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. gorin@cc.huji.ac.il investigated the influence of moderate beer consumption upon lipid metabolism and antioxidant activity in people with coronary artery disease (CAD). @m: 48 men with CAD at Rehovot University Hospital, Israel, who were not alcohol consumers were randomly assigned to either experimental (EG) and control (CG) groups, each with 24 patients. EG patients consumed 330 ml of Maccabee beer (>20 g alcohol) for 30 consecutive days controls did not consume alcohol during the trial period. Total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, total tocopherol (vitamin E) and alpha-tocopherol were measured. @r: EG patients showed a tendency to an increased level of HDL-C and showed a statistically significant increased level of total tocopherol and alpha-tocopherol. @c: Even short periods of moderate beer consumption lead to a number of favourable biochemical changes, which are widely regarded as indicators of CAD prevention, in the blood of patients with CAD.

Comment
This finding ought to be a boost for the breweries. I wonder if these research results will make it into the general media.
