Abstract
HABEK and co-workers, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Health Centre, Bjelovar, Croatia, dubravko.habek@bj.hinet.hr, report on a trial of acupuncture in the treatment of premenstrual syndrome.
Background
Methodology
Results
In this randomized placebo-controlled trial of acupuncture versus sham acupuncture, two groups of women took part in two groups. More than 60% of them suffered from PMS symptoms. Some women in the treatment group stopped having them after one treatment, others after four treatments. Overall, there was a statistically significant reduction in PMS symptoms with the acupuncture treatment as compared to baseline (p = 0.001), whereas for the sham treatment it was insignificant (p > 0.05). The success rate for acupuncture in treating PMS symptoms was 77.8%; for the sham treatment it was 5.9%.
Conclusion
The results from this study are encouraging, and acupuncture should be suggested to patients suffering from PMS as a possible treatment.
