Abstract

HALPIN et al., Inova Heart Center, Inova Fairfax Hospital, 3300 Gallows Road, Falls Church, VA 22042, USA, E: linda.halpin@inova.com, explored the use of guided imagery in heart surgery.

Background

Clinical research has shown that guided imagery can reduce preoperative anxiety and postoperative pain in patients undergoing surgical procedures.

Methodology

Controlled study to compare surgical outcomes in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with or without a guided imagery programme. Data from the hospital’s financial database and patient satisfaction data were analyzed. A questionnaire was developed to assess the benefits of the guided imagery programme.

Results

Patients who completed the guided imagery programme had a shorter average length of stay, a decrease in average direct pharmacy costs, and a decrease in average direct pain medication costs, while maintaining high overall patient satisfaction.

Conclusion

Guided imagery is now considered a complementary means to reduce anxiety, pain, and length of stay amongst the hospital’s cardiac surgery patients.
