Abstract
HARDELL and colleagues, Onkologiska Kliniken, Regionsjukhuset, Orebro, Sweden conducted a questionnaire study to determine the use and prevalence of alternative medicine treatment among cancer patients .
Background
Methodology
Included in the study were 854 cancer patients in the Umea health care region, over the 10-year period from 1987-96. Controls were 144 residents selected randomly from the population register.
Results
16.8% of cancer patients in 1987, 14.4% in 1990 and 16.4% in 1996 used alternative treatments, compared to 19.4% of controls in 1987. The most common forms of alternative medicine were chiropractic and acupuncture and the majority of treatments were for muscle or musculoskeletal system pain .
