Abstract

HJERKINN and colleagues, Center for Clinical Research, Ullevaal University Hospital, Oslo, Norway, elsa.hjerkinn@ulleval.no, have studied the influence of dietary counselling and long-term supplementation with n-3 fatty acids in men at risk from cardiovascular disease.

Background

A higher intake of n-3 fatty acids may positively influence the process of blood clot formation. The aim of the study was to compare 3-year long dietary counselling, n- 3 fatty acid supplementation, or both, on markers of blood vessel function in men at risk from stroke.

Methodology

563 elderly men with long-standing elevated fat levels in the blood were randomized to 4 groups: no intervention, dietary counselling plus placebo capsules, n-3 fatty acid capsules (2.4 grams per day), or n-3 fatty acid capsules plus dietary counselling.

Results

Subjects who had been counselled showed markedly better vascular biochemistry than control subjects. After supplementation with n-3 fatty acids, the biochemical parameters improved compared to placebo supplementation.

Conclusion

Both interventions showed a positive effect which was however not cumulative.
