Abstract
JATUPORN and co-workers, Department of Biochemistry, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand, srisakul.j@chula.ac.th, have studied an intensive lifestyle-changing programme in patients with coronary heart disease.
Background
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of a lifestyle modification programme with the effects of lipid-lowering drugs on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant systems in patients with coronary heart disease.
Methodology
44 patients were divided into two groups. Those in the control group received conventional treatment with lipid-lowering drugs. Those in the experimental group were assigned to lifestyle modification without taking drugs for 4 months. The lifestyle modification programme consisted of a diet low in fat and high in antioxidants and fibre, yoga exercise, stress management and smoking cessation. Antioxidant status was compared in both groups before and after treatment.
Results
At the end of the treatment period, patients in the experimental group revealed a significant increase in blood total antioxidants, plasma vitamin E and erythrocyte reduced glutathione compared to patients on drugs.
Conclusion
The results that the intensive lifestyle modification programme increased circulating antioxidants and reduced oxidative stress in patients with coronary heart disease.

Comment
Isn't it amazing that after merely 4 months, without taking drugs, coronary heart disease patients were able to achieve a significant increase in total antioxidants, plasma vitamin E and erythrocyte reduced glutathione compared to the group on lipid-lowering drugs. They were able to accomplish this by modifying their lifestyle in the following manner: a diet low in fat and high in antioxidants and fibre, yoga, stress management and stopping smoking. So these lifestyle modification patients did better than those taking drugs. Sounds eminently sensible to me.
