Abstract
KIM and KIM, St Mary's Hospital, The Catholic University, Seoul 137-701, Korea, have described the effects of a relaxation breathing exercise on fatigue in patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation.
Background
Exercise is a promising approach for ameliorating the fatigue associated with cancer and its treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a relaxation breathing exercise on fatigue in allogenic haemopoietic stem cell transplantation patients.
Methodology
35 patients were randomized to an exercise group (18 patients) and a control group (17 patients). The exercise was 30 minutes daily for 6 weeks and consisted of physical exercise combined with relaxation breathing exercise. Fatigue was measured by the revised version of the Piper Fatigue Scale.
Results
The exercise group had a greater decrease in fatigue than the control group.
Conclusion
A relaxation breathing exercise that can be taught by a nurse can improve fatigue in bone marrow transplantation patients.
