Abstract
KIM and MILNER, Nutritional Science Research Group, Division of Cancer Prevention, National Cancer Institute, Rockville, MD 20892, USA, reviewed (66 references) the molecular targets for Selenium in cancer prevention .
Background
Selenium has anticarcinogenic and antitumourogenic properties, as revealed by mounting evidence . Unfortunately, the amounts needed to bring about these effects in humans remain elusive .
Methodology
Results
If there is a positive response to exaggerated selenium intakes, it will likely depend on a variety of factors such as consumption of other dietary constituents and variation in a host of genetic pathways involved with cancer . Several biological mechanisms are probably involved including depressed carcinogen bioactivation, reduced cell proliferation, and increased apoptosis .
