Abstract

KYOKONG et al., Department of Anaesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, tested the efficacy of chamomile extract spray for the prevention of post-operative sore throat .

Background

Intubation during anaesthesia often leads to post-operative sore throats . The trial was set up in order to investigate if this could be prevented by using a spray containing chamomile extract.

Methodology

Randomized controlled double-blinded study comparing the effect of chamomile extract spray with the same spray containing no chamomile extract. 161 patients undergoing elective surgery were treated before intubation with either chamomile extract spray or control spray. Sore throats and hoarseness were assessed post-operatively .

Results

52.5% of patients in the chamomile group and 50.6% of patients on the placebo group scored no sore throat or hoarseness (p = 0.159).

Conclusion

Chamomile extract spray administered before surgery does not prevent sore throat or hoarseness post intubation.
