Abstract
MARTARELLI and others, Department of Pharmacological Sciences and Experimental Medicine, University of Camerino, ViaMarcello Scalzino 3, Camerino (MC) 62032, Italy, daniele.martarelli@unicam.it, have found that St John's Wort extracts inhibit the growth of human prostate cancer cells.
Background
It has been shown that serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) act as antitumour agents in prostate cancer. Since St John's wort (Hypericum) is known to act similarly to SSRIs, it seemed worth testing its activity against prostate cancer.
Methodology
Human prostate cancer cells were grown in culture and implanted in mice in the presence and absence of Hypericum extract.
Results
There was a significant reduction in cell growth and in metastases.
Conclusion
This natural compound may be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
