Abstract
MCCULLOCH and colleagues, Pine Street Clinic, San Anselmo, CA, USA, analyze Chinese herbal medicine and interferon in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B.
Background
This meta-analysis was performed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine alone or in combination with interferon-alpha in treating chronic hepatitis B .
Methodology
TCMLARS, AMED, CISCOM, EMBASE, MEDLINE,and Cochrane Collaboration databases were searched and the articles' bibliographies were handsearched .
Results
Chinese herbal medicine significantly reduced sero-reversion of HbsAg and was equivalent to interferon-alpha in sero-reversion of HbeAg and Hepatitis B virus DNA . Chinese herbal medicine combined with interferon-alpha significantly increased seor-reversion of HBsAg, HBeAg, and viral DNA . The Chinese herb active component bufotoxin combined with Interferon-alpha significantly increased HbeAg and viral DNA sero-reversion . The Chinese herb active component kurorinone was equivalent to interferon-alpha in sero-reversion of HbeAg and viral DNA .
Conclusion
Although the quality of existing studies is poor, the data nevertheless suggest that further studies of Chinese herbal medicine and interferon in chronic hepatitis B infection are justified .
