Abstract
MULLER-POPKES and HAJAK, Klinik und Poliklinik fur Psychiatrie, Universitat Gottingen, Germany write that there has not been much research conducted regarding psychotherapeutic treatment for people suffering with primary insomnia. The authors conducted a study using interpersonal psychotherapy for the treatment of insomnia (IPT-1), representing a new causal strategy.
Background
Methodology
25 patients were treated in 12 individual sessions either with IPT-1 or with progressive relaxation training.
Results
Compared to the progressive relaxation group, the IPT-1 patients showed significant improvement of total sleep time, sleep efficiency and wake after sleep onset, according to the preliminary polysomnographic data.
Conclusion
IPT-1 appears to be a promising strategy in the treatment of patients suffering from primary insomnia.
