Abstract
NAPRIENKO and co-authors have reported on a trial of acupuncture in the treatment of chronic daily headache.
Background
The aim of the study was to determine the efficacy of acupuncture in combination with standard drug therapy for chronic daily headache.
Methodology
90 patients with chronic daily headache were studied. The severity of patients' state was assessed using the Clinical Global Impression scale and Pain VAS. The functional activity of nociceptive and antinociceptive systems was evaluated using nociceptive flexor reflex.. The patients were then randomly divided into two groups, a control group receiving standard combination drug therapy, and an acupuncture group receiving a course of acupuncture in addition.
Results
The results indicated a high efficacy of acupuncture in combination with drug treatment. Most efficient was the use of acupuncture in patients with significantly reduced antinociceptive activity and concurrent drug abuse, allowing a reduction of analgesics withdrawal time. Another pronounced effect of acupuncture was found in patients with transformed migraine.
Conclusion
Acupuncture looks like an efficient treatment for chronic daily headache in combination with drugs. It appears to be especially effective in cases where patients' endogenous pain control mechanisms are depleted.
