Abstract
OLSSON and YUAN, Department of Internal Medicine, University Hospital, Linkoping, Sweden studied four antioxidant treatment modalities - probucol, beta-carotene, vitamin E and anti-iron - against atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease (CHD). @r: Some treatments appear to be promising, but others are disappointing. Many published studies of antioxidants in atherosclerosis have been ad-hoc in that the primary endpoint of the research has not been a diagnosis related to atherosclerosis, which may be misleading. Vitamin E is the most promising antioxidant, supported by results from the Cambridge Heart Antioxidant Study. Probucol suffers the disadvantages of decreasing high density lipoprotein (hdl) concentration and is therefore unlikely to affect atheroma in individuals and beta-carotene has been shown to be ineffective against CHD. Anti-iron treatment has yet to be testing in animals or humans. @c: More needs to be learned regarding the role of antioxidants in atherosclerosis before effectiveness of treatment modalities may be ascertained.
