Abstract
RAJ-KUMAR and colleagues, Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Jamia Hamdard, Hamdard University, Hamdard Nagar, New Delhi, India studied, in rabbits, the effect of a new polypharmaceutical herbal formulation upon the progress of atherosclerosis.
Background
Methodology
Lipotab Forte, a new polypharmaceutical herbal formulation developed on the principles of the Unani system, was used to treat rabbits fed cholesterol. Animals treated with this formulation were monitored regarding retardation of the progression of atherosclerosis, and the results were related to changes in the cholesterol content of aorta from the same animal.
Results
Blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels were greatly elevated in all rabbits fed cholesterol, and were significantly decreased with Lipotab Forte treatment. Treatment also decreased aorta thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels from 79.72 to 24.9 nmol/g wet tissue and significantly reduced hepatic cholesterol in hypercholesterolaemic rabbits.
