Abstract
RASCHETTI and co-authors, Center of Epidemiology, Surveillance and Health Promotion, National Institute of Health, Rome, Italy, roras@iss.it, have reviewed (21 references) complementary and alternative medicine in the scientific literature.
Background
The aim of the study was to assess the quantity and quality of papers on complementary and alternative medicine published in scientific journals.
Methodology
A search of Medline was performed for all papers on CAM in humans between 1997 and 2002.
Results
A total of 20,209 papers on CAM were published between 1997 and 2002. This represents 0.7% of the total number of scientific papers contained in Medline. Approximately 50% of these papers appeared in journals with no discernible impact factor. Randomized clinical trials made up 7.6% of all papers.
Conclusion
There is an upwards trend in publications on CAM but too much of it remains without impact, and there is an urgent need for more rigorously conducted controlled trials.
