Abstract

STEIN, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, has reviewed (151 references) motor recovery strategies after stroke. Abstract: Motor impairment is a major cause of disability in stroke victims. Especially in younger stroke survivors, the plasticity of the human brain presents many opportunities for rehabilitation. The use of new exercise programmes, such as constraint-induced movement therapy, robot-aided rehabilitation, and partial body weight supported treadmill training, is being studied intensively and likely to become incorporated into standard post stroke rehabilitation. Medications to enhance recovery, stem cells, and growth factors will also be components of rehabilitation for younger stroke survivors in the foreseeable future.
