Abstract

STUTTART, Department of Nursing, Greenbank Building, University of Central Lancashire, Preston PR1 2HE, UK, writes about working in partnership to develop evidence-based practice within the massage therapy profession.

Background

In view of the moves towards regulatory frameworks and an evidence base for the practice of CAM, there is a need to establish to what extent this is happening and how it can happen in a way that will benefit individuals and organizations involved.

Methodology

Results

The paper outlines the views of professional massage therapists at the Northern Institute of Massage in the North of England and discusses how a professional organization for massage can work in partnership with Higher Education to develop an evidence base for practice.

Conclusion

A significant number of practitioners at the Northern Institute of Massage are aware of the need for an evidence base for practice but need more support in finding, reading and applying research findings to their practice. A partnership between professional organizations and higher education institutions can benefit both parties.
