Abstract
SUN and colleagues, Xiyuan Hospital, China Academy of TCM, Beijing China studied, using spectral analysis, different characteristics of heart rate variability according to forms of respiratory exercises practised. @m:METHODS: 32 volunteers participated in varying types of mental activities which affect respiration, including concentrating the mind at inspiration and concentrating the mind at expiration. @r:RESULTS: Different forms of mental activity affecting breathing influence the function of the autonomic nervous system in different ways. When the mind was concentrated at inspiration, autonomic nervous system function was kept in balance, with both sympathetic and vagal activities significantly enhanced. With the mind concentrated at expiration, vagal activity was reduced which produced marked changes in sympathovagal balance. @c: Breathing exercises and mental activity can affect heart rate variability and autonomic nervous system function.
