Abstract

VAN WEERT and colleagues, Department of Rehabilitation, University Hospital Groningen, The Netherlands, Evw@IKN.nl, have studied physical functioning and quality of life after cancer rehabilitation.

Background

An intensive multi-focus cancer rehabilitation programme was developed in order to help patients overcome cancer-related problems and regain quality of life.

Methodology

34 patients with cancer-related physical and psychosocial problems were the subjects of this prospective observational study. A 6-week intensive programme consisted of four components: individual exercise, sports, psycho-education, and information. Ergometry performance, muscle force, and quality of life were measured before and after 6 weeks of rehabilitation.

Results

At the end of the programme, statistically significant improvements were found in ergometry performance, muscle force, and several domains of the RAND-36 quality of life measure.

Conclusion

The 6-week multifocus intensive rehabilitation programme has immediate beneficial effects on physiological variables, on quality of life, and on fatigue.
