Abstract

WAHNER-ROEDLER and colleagues, Department of Internal Medicine and Division of General Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minn 55905, USA, wahnerroedler.dietlind@mayo.edu, have investigated the use of complementary and alternative medicine by patients with fibromyalgia.

Background

The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency and patterns of complementary and alternative therapy use by patients referred to a fibromyalgia treatment programme.

Methodology

289 patients referred to the Mayo fibromyalgia treatment programme filled in a 85-item questionnaire on CAM use in the previous six months.

Results

98% of the patients had used some form of CAM in the previous 6 months. The 10 most frequently used CAM treatments were exercise for a specific medical problem (48%), spiritual healing (45%), massage therapy (44%), chiropractic (37%), vitamin C (35%), vitamin E (31%), magnesium (29%), vitamin B complex (25%), green tea (24%), and weight-loss programmes (20%).

Conclusion

The use of complementary and alternative therapies is extremely common amongst patients with fibromyalgia.
