Abstract

WAHNER-ROEDLER and colleagues, Department of Internal Medicine and Division of General Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minn 55905, USA, wahnerroedler.dietlind@mayo.edu, have reported on the use of complementary and alternative therapies by patients with fibromyalgia.

Background

The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency and types of CAM therapies used by patients referred to a fibromyalgia programme at a tertiary care centre.

Methodology

An 85-item questionnaire was distributed to patients upon entry into the fibromyalgia programme

Results

Of 289 patients who completed the questionnaire, 98% had used some form of CAM in the previous 6 months. The 10 most frequently used CAM theapies were exercise for a specific medical problem (48%), spiritual healing and prayers (45%), massage therapy (44%), chiropractic (37%), vitamin C (35%), vitamin E (31%), magnesium (29%), vitamin B complex (25%), green tea (24%), and weight-loss programmes (20%).

Conclusion

CAM therapies are very commonly used by patients with fibromyalgia in tertiary care.
