Abstract
WANG and co-workers, Affiliated Hospital of Nantong Medical College, Nantong 226001, China, found an alteration of vitamin E levels in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma .
Background
The objective of this study was to investigate the alterations in vitamin E levels in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma and explore its mechanism of action.
Methodology
A comparative analysis of serum vitamin E levels was conducted in patients with various pancreatic diseases .
Results
Patients with chronic pancreatitis, acute pancreatitis, and pancreatic adenocarcinoma all had significantly lower serum vitamin E levels than healthy controls . Amongst the three groups of pancreatic diseases, patients with carcinoma had significantly lower vitamin E levels than either of the other two disorders .
Conclusion
Significant reduction in vitamin E levels occurs in patients with pancreatic cancer . This suggests that oxidation and anti-oxidation imbalances might be involved in the pathogenesis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
