Abstract
WOZNIAK and colleagues, Specialized Outpatient Clinics, Polish Mothers' Memorial Hospital-Research Institute, 281/289 Rzgowska St. 93-338 Lodz, Poland, wozniakp@man.lodz.pl, have studied the anti-inflammatory and immune stimulating effects of acupuncture treatment in women suffering from chronic pelvic inflammatory disease.
Background
This trial aimed to measure changes in the immune system of women with chronic pelvic inflammatory disease undergoing a four-week treatment course of acupuncture.
Methodology
39 women received three acupuncture treatments per week for four weeks each, or a total of 12 treatments. At baseline and at the end of treatment, pain scores were recorded and blood serum was evaluated for immunoglobulin M, albumin, alpha-globulins, alpha2-globulins, gamma-globulins, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and white blood cell count.
Results
The study population experienced a significant drop in pain scores (from 4.9 +/- 0.8 to 0.6 +/- 1.1) over the course of the treatment. Significant decreases in erythrocyte sedimentation rates and IgM levels were also measured.
Conclusion
The study suggests that acupuncture treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease has an anti-inflammatory and immunocompetent effect.
