Abstract
WYLIE and colleagues, Department of Neuropsychiatry, Bootham Park Hospital, York UK studied the efficacy of acupuncture and massage with relaxation upon chronic headache .
Background
Methodology
Patients with chronic headache were randomly assigned to either acupuncture or massage with relaxation instead of a change to their prescribed medication.
Results
There was a significant improvement in pain ratings in both treatment groups, but there was a greater effect seen in migraine patients treated by massage with relaxation compared with acupuncture . No psychological factors were found to predict response to either treatment. At the end of the study, 13% of patients were significantly more worried that there may be a more serious underlying cause for their headache, despite reassurance and improvement in their headache scores.
