Recently there have been virtually apocalyptic warnings about how, with the development and spread of antibiotic resistance to even those drugs of last resort,  the world will be thrown backwards to prehistoric medicine times, with 10 million deaths expected from infections which had been cured by antibiotics. This is not a new development – similar warnings have been issued for decades. However the development of new antibiotic drugs has not kept pace with the enterprising resistant bacteria, placing us all at danger.

This PH Online Issue 227 has as the cover story the article The Detoxification Answer – Toxicity as a Clinical Diagnosis which describes the efficacy of a colloidal silver product which has a broader pathogen kill spectrum than traditional antibiotics, antifungal or antiviral drugs. In a previous Issue 224 was published the article Colloidal Silver - Antimicrobial, Antifungal and Antiviral Mechanisms with Clinical Actions with references to the published literature in addition to historical usage of these antimicrobial products.

Additionally there are well referenced, high quality reviews of the literature documenting the efficacy of silver compounds over many years such as Safety and Efficacy of Intravenous Oligodynamic Silver.

However, the medical profession and wider mainstream media don’t appear to recognize any treatments as being effective unless these are drug-or medically derived treatments. How often have you heard about effective non-drug approaches such as these mentioned above to infection?

I have come to this very sad and sorry understanding, kicking and screaming, following decades of discovering, researching and publishing medical and scientific information about the clinical efficacy of many alternative and complementary treatment approaches  - herbal, nutritional, Chinese, Ayurvedic, aromatherapeutic, osteopathic, chiropractic, bodywork, to name but a few disciplines -  to most medical and health afflictions, including even the most serious - cancer, heart disease, diabetes, infections.

For after all, as any good research scientist, schooled in the scientific method, the over-arching philosophy held by me and many others before me, has always been that if one has a hypothesis, performs the experiments to prove the accuracy of the hypothesis, i.e. the hypothesis is proved, that the scientific community will embrace these results.

The history of science certainly does not always happen this way; in fact there is usually a massively sceptical community which, far from embracing particular results, rejects them, and attempts to refute and demolish the purveyor / scientist. It is often many decades later that after much struggle, that the treatment / discovery may be finally shown to be true and finally adopted. Think about just a few such discoveries including that ulcers were caused by Helicobacter pylori, that oranges and limes could prevent and cure scurvy, even that bacteria caused infections and death in childbirth and that hygiene prevented many diseases.

Such is scientific progress, one might intone; however it would appear that so-called ‘evidence-based medicine’ excludes completely, any evidence from non-pharmaceutical, non-medical treatment, i.e. that the entire medical traditions and clinical results from many years of successfully treating diseases with nutritional, herbal, dietary, Ayurvedic, Chinese medicine. These are not new revelations - others have been voicing these views since early in the 20^th Century, when, prior to the discovery and development of many pharmaceutical drugs and antibiotics, successful clinical treatments were developed and applied for heart disease - vitamins C and E, cancer - nutritional, herbal and dietary regimes developed by far-sighted pioneers including Hoxsey, Gerson, Budwig, Pauling, and immunological tailored  these days by PhD research scientists and physicians including Dr Burzynski's antineoplastons.

Many complementary and alternative practitioners successfully treat and indeed cure many patients without resorting to pharmaceutical drugs, but these successes are trumpeted in the media by thunderous silence. For how much longer?
