Editorial Issue 218

Chemotherapy - one of the three legally sanctioned highly toxic cancer treatments - the other two are surgery and radiotherapy - has often been depicted in graphic terms including  “barbaric, medieval, crimes against humanity, genocide”[1]. Lord Maurice Saatchi’s beloved wife Josephine Hart died in 2011 from inoperative and terminal ovarian cancer following chemotherapy and radiation treatments which he describes as "medieval, "degrading and ineffective” in interviews and articles published in the mainstream media.[2,3]  Maurice (Lord) Saatchi’s Medical Innovation Bill has been redrafted after a public consultation organised by the UK Department of Health (DH)[4] and went to committee stage in the House of Lords on 24th October 2014.[5]

Alas, as everything connected with health, environment, war and finance these days seems to be part of overtly confrontational battles between opposing sides, even the grossly watered down Saatchi Medical Innovation Bill which would permit non-conventional treatment only after cancer patients have exhausted every available treatment and only with the permission of two outside physicians, has met with opposition from some doctors, researchers and patient safety organizations. Unbelievably, groups including the British Heart Foundation, The Medical Research Council and Wellcome Trust have issued a statement warning that this bill could lead to patients being harmed and that the use of new drugs could negatively affect the quality of clinical trials data.[6]

Here is an extract from my own Research Proposal: Cancer Patients’ Survival: Comparing Integrated Alternative Therapies and Chemotherapy/Radiotherapy Treatment - Sandra Goodman PhD to compare clinical outcomes between chemotherapy and alternative integrated cancer protocols.[7] Despite its circulation to a selection of scientific and medical experts in the field, I have yet to receive a serious proposal to progress this research. It is early days however.

The well-known and established toxic, sometimes fatal side effects of chemotherapy poisons administered to cancer patients are published and well-known in the medical and research literature. Clinically, between 10%-25% of cancer patients may die as a result of undergoing these highly toxic treatments which may also be causative factors in multi-drug resistance, cancer stem cell formation, mutated p53 and other cancer gene mutations which may explain short term remission, subsequent recurrence, metastases and secondary cancers years later following conventional cancer treatment. In fact published surveys of oncologists revealed that  >80% would refuse chemotherapy with cisplatin for themselves or families.[7]

In view of the harm, even death, sometimes caused by chemotherapy to cancer patients, it is incredible that certain doctors and researchers could oppose presumably less lethal alternative treatments on the grounds that patients could be harmed. Could it be that harm could be done to lucrative remunerative drug clinical trials?

In this Issue 218 of Positive Health PH Online Carl O Helvie RN Dr PH describes his 38-years survival from advanced lung cancer, with the prognosis at age 42 of having only 6 months to live, in Longest Living Lung Cancer Survivor Used Natural Interventions. Dr Helvie in his book [8] as did Robert Houston[9] and G Edward Griffin[10]  provide comprehensive historical overviews of the pharmaceutical, medical and governmental politics which have contributed to more than a century of the brutal suppression, harassment and prosecution of many medically and scientifically gifted physicians who have significantly contributed to and advanced our knowledge regarding non-toxic yet effective cancer treatments.

These pitched battles between the so-called medical establishment and so-called alternative medical communities extend far beyond the fields of cancer and affect every aspect of healthcare approaches. It is the divided dichotomy between pharmaceutical-based medicine and natural-based treatment approaches. Do we wish to nuke the body to destroy all bacteria and viruses or do we wish to use non-toxic therapeutic treatments to enable the body and its immune system to restore balance and health to the individual? It is part of the continuing age-old impasse between Pasteur and Beauchamp - the microorganism or the terrain? The two solitudes extend to the vaccination issue, nutrition and medicine, chemicals in agriculture and in the soil; in fact it is difficult to think of any branch of healthcare not affected by the war being waged by the pharmaceutical / medical establishment and the naturopathic / alternative / complementary professional communities.

As a peacefully inclined individual, the cacophony of war and discord is becoming intolerable, especially when virtually every family, even every individual is being affected by cancer, and where infants are potentially harmed by vaccines as set out by Dr Joseph Mercola DO in the Letters to the Editor in this Issue.[11]

Positive Health PH Online Issue 218 contains a superb array of informative and authoritative articles spanning the entire spectrum of mind-body-spirit, including Healing, Hypnotherapy, Chinese Medicine, Natural Cancer Approaches, Lymphatic Function, Nutrition for the Brain, Drinks and Hydration, Healthy Eating and Exercise, Anatomy / Physiology of the Shoulder, Stretching and Exercise and the Health Benefits of the Salutogenesis Model. Plus, as always, Research Updates including a neurological review of treatments for multiple sclerosis, anti-diabetic properties and mechanisms of North American ginseng (NAG) as an alternative medicine for the treatment of diabetes and much more.
