Subtle Energy - Myth or Reality?

Imagine you lived in a remote village without technology where people loved music. In every house there is at least one person who plays an instrument. During weekday evenings, music drifts from the open windows of the houses as the musicians are practising on their own or in little groups, and on weekends the village orchestra gives concerts.

One day, I come to your village to listen to the orchestra playing. After the concert, I produce a little black box and claim that I have captured the music in this box. I open the lid and take out a small case, which contains a brown tape. I show it to you and the other villagers and tell you that this is where the music is stored. The villagers, including yourself, find this statement confusing. How can an entire orchestra be in this little case? This is clearly impossible. I explain to you that I have captured the sound of the music in all its detail on the brown tape. Now you and all the villagers know for sure that I am a fraud. How can you capture a sound that drifts through the air and is gone as soon as it has been played? How can sound stick to a tape? Logic and simple common sense tell you that this is impossible.

Now I produce a cord with two little buttons at the end and I invite you to listen. I put the little case back in the black box and press a button. You cannot believe your ears, but there it is: you can hear the orchestra playing just as it did a moment ago, and the sound comes from the little black box. Every villager in turn listens to the music, and they all agree: this is some sort of trick or I am in league with the devil. In either case, nobody wants me and I am asked to leave the village.

But for weeks after, people discuss the implausibility of capturing something that is invisible on a little brown tape in a box....

When I tell people about my work as a health kinesiologist, I often encounter this 'village' attitude: how can you test an arm muscle response, hold a few acupuncture points or place magnets on the body and claim that this will make your hair grow back or your duodenal ulcers disappear? How can anyone be expected to believe that a muscle response can give information about what the body needs to rebalance itself and heal?

In the same way that a homeopath works with essences that are diluted to such an extent that there is no measurable trace of the original substance left, I work with subtle energies, which can no longer be measured with common technical equipment. So how do you know that what I am working with is really there?

There is, in fact, a great deal of detailed research that demonstrates the existence of these subtle energies. In his excellent book Vibrational Medicine,[1] the American doctor Richard Gerber cites examples of research that has been conducted all over the world and proves that there is a bioenergetic field which accompanies the physical body. Also known as etheric body, this field is an energy template that carries coded information for the spatial organization of tissue and organs as well as information for cellular repair.

Research that supports this theory goes all the way back into the 1940s where an American neuroanatomist, Harold S Burr, experimented with the electrical field around seedlings. He found that the electrical field around a sprout was not the shape of the original seed. Instead, the surrounding field resembled the adult plant. Burr's data suggested that any developing organism was destined to follow a prescribed growth template and that such a template was generated by the organism's individual electromagnetic field.

Semyon Kirlian, a Russian researcher, found the same to be true by using photography in the presence of a high frequency electrical field. His photo-graphs were able to show and measure changes in the energy fields of living systems in a visual manner, which showed up as a spark pattern or corona around the edges of the photographed organism.

In order to transfer energetic information from the etheric to the physical body, an interface is needed, and this is the meridian system.

The acupuncture points on the human body are points along the meridian system that runs through the tissues of the body. This, too, has been proved to exist in experiments. The French researcher Pierre de Vernejoul injected a radioactive substance into the acupoints of patients and found that the substance migrated along classical Chinese acupuncture meridian pathways even though the meridian pathways are invisible to the eye. Injections into random points of the body and into veins and lymphatic channels were unable to demonstrate similar results, suggesting that the meridians are a unique and separate network of pathways in the body. Further experiments showed that cutting a meridian that related to the liver resulted in a rapid degeneration of liver tissue. Without subtle energy supply via the meridians, tissue, organs and cells cannot function.

So subtle energy does exist. It has been examined in detailed research projects, it is measurable and it is repeatable. This is good news because it means that subtle energy therapies can develop a better standing in a world of orthodox medicine. For those who are ill, the news is equally good because energy medicine opens the way to helping the body heal itself without cutting it, poisoning it or subjecting it to chemical onslaught which causes all sorts of side effects. It means that we are entering a new age of health care where we are able not only to get information about the body's state of health but where we can also help the healing process without incisions, operations or other invasive methods. I am very glad that I have learnt to use subtle energy tools to do just that.
