Although the title suggests this book is about Lung Cancer - one of the cancers with the worst prognosis - Carl Helvie has written a book which could justifiably be considered to be one of the most comprehensive books which ought to be on the shelf of every practitioner, cancer patient and certainly oncologist and which shows how wrong the ‘death sentence’ often meted out by cancer doctors can be. It also shows, par excellence,  how someone, diagnosed with a supposedly terminal cancer can go about constructing a series of effective natural treatment strategies.

" ... forty years ago my doctor said, “You have lung cancer and we can offer you chemotherapy and surgery. Without these you will be dead in six months.” Did the doctor tell me there are less invasive therapies that are sometimes more effective? Did he tell me the side effects and effectiveness of chemotherapy and surgery, if chosen? Did he encourage me to make the decisions about MY care? The answer is no to all of these questions. Realizing answers to these and other questions would have been useful at the time; my goal for writing this article and my lung cancer book is to provide some information that might be useful when faced with a cancer diagnosis. Information will better assist you to make the decisions that are best for you because it is YOUR Body and YOUR life and I feel strongly that you should be in charge of decision making that can be empowering and facilitate healing.

"Regarding the prognosis of “6 months to live”, I have learned over the years that this is not a medical diagnosis. Instead, it is a God diagnosis because only God knows when we will die. And from interacting with many cancer patients over the past 40 years I have learned that this is a relatively common practice of oncologists to proclaim “3 months to live” or “6 months to live” or some other amount of time. For patients facing cancer, this may be a disservice because it can create additional stress and also can become a self-fulfilling prophecy because of the influence of the mind on the body. I personally would prefer that the doctor tell the patient that they have 50 or 100 years to live."

Longest Living Lung Cancer Survivor Used Natural Interventions www.positivehealth.com/article/cancer/longest-living-lung-cancer-survivor-used-natural-interventions 2014.

Chapter 1 of You can Beat Lung Cancer provides a full description of how tumours are staged from Stage 0 through to Stage IV, along with statistics regarding incidence, survival, distribution and causes of lung cancer, embracing the well-known tobacco, and including perhaps lesser known asbestos, arsenic, radon, diets low in fruit and vegetables, prevention of lung cancer and traditional versus integrative or alternative cancer treatments. Additionally there is a riveting section entitled Discouraging Integrative or Alternative Cancer Treatments, which include sub-sections including Laetrile (Vitamin B17) from The World Without Cancer - The Story of Vitamin B17. 2009, Hoxsey Formula, Essiac Tea and other alternative treatments which provides a review of the literature about suppression of cancer treatments. This includes Burzynski, Gerson, Kelley, Protocel, Revici and other notable persecuted cancer pioneers including Dr Frank Shallenberger also described in Outsmart Your Cancer  by Tanya Harter Pierce (2009). Helvie provides a coherent analysis/rationale about why alternative cancer approaches, if they are successful, are not prescribed and are in fact relegated to the Quackwatch categories in a section entitled Traditional Therapies for Lung and Other Cancers Driven by Politics citing information presented in The Politics of Cancer Treatment by Edward Griffin. 2009. This chapter alone should be required reading for every cancer patient and skeptics asking about why only conventional treatments are included in the medical system.

Chapter 2 describes in full details the author’s considerable protocol of alternative treatments he undertook upon diagnosis, and his decision to forego the suggestion of immediate surgery to save his life. Following considerable reflection / meditation, Helvie embarked on an array of treatments which included laetrile, vitamins, diet - foods, how to prepare and cook or eat raw, and which food were to be avoided, including sugar and refined sugar products - described in very helpful detail, stress management, meditation, visualization, physical exercise and a positive attitude.

In Chapter 3, Helvie states that “It has been 36 years since my lungs were clear from cancer and I have been free of any signs of a recurrence.” He describes how he sustained his continued good health with nutrition and water, fruit and vegetables, protein, grains, oils, supplements, minerals, probiotics, alkalinity, as well as his exercise, meditation, relaxation, stress reduction and work programs have all continued. This is one very disciplined man!!

The book also includes Chapters 4-8 - by Dr Francisco Contreras, Dr James Forsythe, Dr Bernie Siegel, Dr Kim Dalzell; and Tanya Harter Pierce on additional alternative medical, and nutritional interventions for lung cancer used in clinics and at home. Dr Contreras describes in valuable clinical detail the IRT-C protocol employed at the Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico, including a fully referenced description of Oxidative Stress in lung cancer and how the IRT-C protocol employs several “novel adjuvant measures intended to boost production of hydrogen peroxide in the tumor.” These include a ‘perfluorocarbon’ oxygen-carrier molecule known as ‘Perftec’, originally developed in Russia - ‘Perftoran’ which when infused intravenously, greatly enhances the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood, as well as on the day prior to ascorbate infusion, treatment with ozone autohemotherapy, which renders red blood cells more flexible, able to more readily surrender oxygen to tissues.

Dr Contreras compared the survival rates at Oasis of Hope with conventional treatment for years 1 through 5 also documented graphically:

“Comparing IRT-C with conventional therapy, 1-year survivals were 82% vs 20%; 2-year survivals 50% vs 6%; 3-year survivals 27% vs 3%; 4-year survivals 23% vs 2% and 5-year survivals 9% vs 1.6%. At the conclusion of their clinical study, results with IRT-C were nearly 6 times better than the results using conventional therapy.

Dr Contreras states that although these results are encouraging, that they are still a long way away from turning advanced cancer into a disease that can be managed chronically and that they are undertaking additional initiatives, including immunotherapy and additional adjuvant strategies, which they hope to evaluate in treatment protocols.

In Chapter 5, Dr James Forsythe MD HMD describes his integrative  treatment protocols at Cancer Screening and Treatment Center of Nevada and Century Wellness Clinic which include sugar-free diets, alkalinizing diets, bio-oxidative therapies, specific vitamin supplement therapies, herbal therapies, amino acid supplements, together with low-dose fractionated chemotherapy or insulin potentiating therapies and chemosensitivity testing. Dr Forsythe has also conducted studies, the results of which have shown over a 30% continued overall survivorship, compared with 2.1% survival rate in conventional oncology.

The subsequent chapters by Dr Bernie Siegel, Dr Kim Dalzell - Diet, Nutrition and advanced supplements and Tanya Harter Pierce who describes Protocol® previously called Cancel  - “a proprietary blend of Tetrahydroxyquinone, Rhodizonic Acid, sodium, potassium, Croconic Acid, Triquinoyl, Pyrocatechol, Leuconic Acid, mineral and trace elements including copper.” This was one of the most fascinating chapters of this wholly fascinating book, including how Protocel®, developed by Jim Sheridan, was suppressed and obstructed from being studied by the American Cancer Society, and how all the results of his considerable research at the Detroit Institute of Cancer Research had been burned!

Chapter 9 provides details about how to stop smoking, anti-ageing and other exercises, nutrition and environmental advice about asbestos, radon, sick building syndrome and air quality. Chapter 10 provides interventions regarding stress reduction, mental activities including relaxation, visualization, attitudes and thoughts, affirmations, energy exercises, meditation and spiritual attributes, including faith, forgiveness, service to others, your ideals and goals.

There are almost 20 pages of References, organized by Chapter, as well as a 25-page Index. Carl Helvie is a formidable, disciplined and successful cancer survivor, to be much admired. He states that as “July, 2014 marked 40-years since my diagnosis making me the longest living lung cancer survivor known.”

This book belongs on everyone’s shelf - it could save you, your patients or a loved one’s life.
